About spellpower

#1 Post by Marbat »

I find spellpower a bit confusing. Some spells seem to benefit from it, some don't. In the case when spellpower actually enhances a certain spell, not every aspect is affected. Generally, the effects improved by magic are also improved by spellpower. This is where things become tricky. Magic itself increases spellpower... so... when an effect is affected by the magic stat, is it in fact improved by the magic stat only, or by the spellpower boost the magic stat offers?... or does it take advantage of both? I think both, but I am not very familiar with the source code and never bothered to check.
Wouldn't it be easier to understand how spellpower works if spell descriptions took spellpower into account? Something like "The damage will increase with the Magic stat and the Spellpower attribute.", maybe?

Yeah, I might go through and change it for Darkgod here before the next beta if I remember (assuming he's cool with that, he let me do it to paradox mages). Most spells should say Spellpower instead of Magic.

This is a well known issue, mentioned many times over IRC and in-game chat, and probably a few times on the forum, too.

Long story short: The talent descriptions lie. Almost every talent in the game that says 'scales with magic' is in fact calling on your spellpower total. That magic raises spellpower is irrelevant to that -- a character who has 100 spellpower and 10 magic and 100 spellpower and 60 magic is going to have magic scaling talents that do the exact same thing. How much of that 100 spellpower is contributed by the magic stat is largely irrelevant. The only major exception to this is doomed talents, which actually scale off magic.

As for fixing it, it would take going through all the spellpower using talents and, well, manually fixing the description. That's work

Still, if you're offering...

E: VVV Actually, that was directed at th'OP, but y'ninja'd me, Edge :P

I started the all rolling with chronomancers, I don't mind finishing it up.
