Aegis as a generic tree for necromancers

#1 Post by Elkan »

I've heard minor complaints about necros having too many generic points to spend and no logical place to dump them, and this seems like a sensible and thematically apt tree as after all the most important thing to a necromancer is preserving his own lif.... er.. Ski.... erm...bones? And shields are very good things for the soon-to-be undead given that those nice infusions are going to be... ahh... not such the long term investment.....

I think I'd much rather them get some sort of necromancer-only generic tree (or two) instead of aegis. Then they'd have something to give if they were ever implemented as escort quest targets.

Not really sure what they should be, but something. Plus having Aegis would make it a bit too much of a no-brainer. The aegis tree is rather ridiculously powerful.

Well you do kind of have a point, but TOME was never really about classes being balanced around each other, and people don't go for the morally bankrupt, ultimate power at any cost, all things are tools school of applied magic because they want to be underpowered and give the other guy a sporting chance ;)

Nah, they don't need it. Minions are arguably a better shield, and the Vampiric Gift talent helps sustain necros with minionless builds. Like Frumple said, they could use a custom generic tree.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

I had no trouble at all with generic points on my 33 necro. Just think about it logically. Class points should be used for specific powers to their class that bring the power. Generic are for general utility and self enhancing things. Thick skin is 5 points. Arcane eye is 5 points. Dark Gifts is 5 points. Blessings is another 5 points. Phase door is 5 points. Displacement shield is a MUST HAVE 5 points it is too powerful to do without. Keen senses is 5 points. Dont try to build a necro as an archmage, build them as a necro. Not once on my necro did I wish I have Aegis, thats what Vampiric Gift is for, and its way more powerful if you invest in it. Circle of Death, Cold Flames, impending doom all healing you every time they do damage to EACH enemy? Yes, please.

Yeah, I think necros do need another generic tree but I don't think Aegis is the one they need.

One idea I had was to make the Lich stuff a whole generic tree. Not that I don't like the current implementation but gaining more and more undead-e-ness or something as you put points in your Death's Mistress tree might be fun. The lich sustain could still be the capstone talent.

Another idea is some sort of dark blessings or dark rituals but all the talent ideas I had weren't generic enough (all stuff related to minions or doing neat stuff with the necrotic aura).

As the How to be a necromancer guides hint at the interference of demonic forces why not open up a high level tree 20+ that involves drawing upon said demonic taints culminating in summoning horrors or demons. Investing in the tree should probably have some powerful benefits, but have a negative impact on mental resist and will saves...

I thought the lack of a demon-themed locked tree was odd, too, Elkan. I think there is ample room for a whole new Corrupter class that can summon and commune with demons/horrors. The idea has been thrown around a few times, though I haven't seen an implementation that sounded particularly fun.
