A spirit master is a powerful but risky class, forcing mighty spirits from another world to do hey bidding.
Spirit masters would only use sustained abilities. Amount active at any time is not limited, but they increase a new resource - instability.
Instability marks how difficult it is for the spirit master to keep the spirits under control. Above 20% they would start losing health, above 35% speed would be decreased, and after 60% they would draw monsters nearby. Effects scale with more instability.
In addition to these effects, every talent active would have it's own side effects - defensive aura of earth would have chance of turning you into stone, water-based healing could start suffocating you, etc.
Side effects would be weaker with high willpower, but would become literally lethal at around 90% instability anyway
There would be multiple talent trees - each with two abilities and an ultimate technique.
Ultimate technique is sustained, direct use of power of the spirit, extremely dangerous and burdening power than can be used for a limited amount of time - having it active progressively increases strength and duration of a condition that increases instability. Simply activating such technique adds 5 instability for 2000 turns. Every turn of having it active increases it's duration by 50 turns and instability penalty by 0.2
You can only have one ultimate technique, and there is only one level of it's talent. Obtaining it increases category mastery by 0.2, side effects of all ultimate techniques is temporary loss of control over body and permanent penalty to instability
Some preliminary ideas for talents:
Aspect of water spirit
* Regeneration - greatly increases regeneration of health, potential side effect - suffocation
* Barrier - adds an additional layer of "health" that is highly resistant to attacks. Potential side effect - deactivation and severe reduction of resistances.
* Ultimate technique - Surrounds you by a sphere of water, suffocating nearby creatures and increasing your max life by several hundreds and regeneration by tens of points per second.
Aspect of fire spirit
* Hell's eye - focus eye of the evil spirit on a chosen target, dealing fire damage until deactivated. Side effect - the eye might spot you.
* Flames of hatred - converts x% of damage dealt into fire damage. Side effect - it can explode into your face and blind you.
* Ultimate technique - Deals fire damage to nearby foes, doubles your physical and ranged attack power. Melee attacks deal damage to up to three foes in a line, ranged attacks are explosive.
Aspect of air spirit
* Static charge - has chance to strike nearby creatures with lighting when you(or them) move. Side effects - confusion, paralysis or stunning you and dealing burning damage to you.
* Speed of wind - increases movement and attack speed. Side effect - can start throwing you around randomly
* Ultimate technique - 70% chance for any attack to miss you, flying(passing and seeing through walls)
Aspect of earth spirit
* Stone skin - Increase in defence and armor. Side effect - Pins you to the ground and deals heavy physical damage
* ???(dunno how to name it) - decreases movement speed, but makes you immune to being knocked back and allows you to push all but the most massive enemies. Side effect - dunno, sorry
* Ultimate technique - Nullifies 80% of damage dealt to you but slowly eats away your max life(but it returns once negative effect is gone)
Aspect of gods
* Life - if you reach level 5 of this talent, you gain another life. Talent is lost at death, can be learned once more.
* Death - you summon a reaper's scythe that allows you to consume souls of enemies for doubled or even tripled experience(does not work on bosses so much)
Meta
* Higher instability limit
* Stance of sage - decreases instability by X but makes you unable to move and drops evasion to 0.
* Spirit purge - forces the spirit out and makes you unable to use your ultimate technique. If you defeat the spirit you can chose another ultimate technique.
Well, these are of course only some example ideas, but I think they show what I'm thinking about pretty well. I wanted to only share the general concept itself but couldn't resist thinking up some talents.
