ghouls revisited

#1 Post by Canderel »

Somewhere in the forums (apologies for not referencing it) someone said ghouls suck.

Well yeah, I have to agree. Trying to break them I tried playing a ghoul cursed. And I have to say it makes sense. Anyway played fairly easily, a couple of close calls but generally doing fine, but then I got to halfling hideout. Lvl 1. Facing.... Ghouls! And they diseased me. Without a better shielding rune I died. But I want to be able to disease opponents like they can! And I want to be fairly resistant to it.

Yeah, makes sense for them to have disease resistance and the ability to spread disease easily. Maybe Retch and Gnaw should inflict diseases?

Disease spreading would make for some pretty powerful reavers/corrupters, but that wouldn't be the end of the world.

I find the undead races fascinating because, in folklore and the modern fantasy mythos, undead are supposed to be sturdier than living humans. But thanks to the lack of infusions, they're actually quite a bit more fragile, more HP or not. That might change as Taints are integrated into the game, so I'm hesitant to suggest ways around that. But as it stands, they're actually pretty difficult to keep alive, compared to a Higher or a Thalore.

Ghouls, though, are certainly the worst player character race. The -20% global speed is just horrifically crippling. Back when speed was cumulative rather than multiplicative, it wasn't too horrific-- you could counter it with the (heftily-priced) Essence of Speed or maybe a good set of equipment. But now those bonuses are reduced by the initial speed reduction, making clawing your way back up anywhere NEAR 100% speed impossible for most characters.

I feel like the idea was that their slowness was offset by their resilience-- and that's what the racial description implies. But they're actually quite fragile, and as such they're just not a viable race at almost any level of play. Skeletons have less HP and Constitution, but are actually quite a bit more survivable because they have an extra shield and don't lose one out of five of their actions at all times.

But we'll see what happens with the Taint system, I suppose.
