New class (can we ever get enough?):Crystal Master (Psionic)

So, I was thinking on a new psionic class
It would be a melee class using a… crystal sword. It would be a bad, bad two handed weapon unless powered by a gem. When that happens, it combat statistics change (based around the level of the gem) and it gains the gems damage type. Plus, the stats that affect it would be Will and Dex and the wielder would also gain the gems powers, as if imbued.

I've managed to implement this so far but I still have a few doubts:
1) If I change the gem on a sword, do I get back the one it had? I’m inclined to say yes, it would be nice to be able to adapt to the situation. I was thinking on a talent to be able to use more and more powerful gems on a sword and maybe on level 5 it would be a free action to change the gem, allowing us to have the right weapon for almost every occasion
2) Is the power of the gem permanent? I was thinking that the power of the gem on the sword could slowly deplete making us have to change it every once in awhile. It would make less permanent weapons and maintain a hunt for gems… not really sure about this one as there will be a few talents that also destroy the gems

As for new talent trees(all use psi):
- Crystal Focus – Some utility powers based on Will
o Cristal Use – Allow the use of gems on crystal swords. More levels mean more powerful gems. Free action to change the gem on level 5
o Third eye – Imbue a gem into a helmet
o Burnout – Increase the power of the gem on your crystal sword for x rounds. Gem is destroyed after use
o Impact – Launch the gem on your sword and it explodes. Not really sure about this one as a 4th level talent…

- Crystal Edge – A more combat oriented tree, based on Dex
o Sharp Crystal – More damage with crystal swords
o Resonating Crystal – Stun attack. More levels mean more damage and more time stunned
o Lunge – Beam attack, striking everything
o Razor – Several(2,3?) attacks and heavy bleeding

- Mind over body – Mental powers, based on Will
o Deflect – Sustained. Increases defense
o Push – Like Willful Strike. Really cool power
o Mind healing – A regen power
o Combo – Two weapon strikes followed by a Push. More levels, more damage

- Crystal Mind – A more defensive tree, Will based
o Crystal Armor – Sustained. Increases Armor. Only with light armor
o Crystal Nova – Must have Crystal Armor. An area attack centered on the player. Ends the armor
o Deflect Missiles – A staple. % change to deflect. Can deflect spells on level 3
o Cocoon – Stuns the player, makes him invulnerable and increases life regeneration for a while.

It would have a few more trees, of course. Some combat ones, and some psi ones. I’m not really into auras but the shields could fit in nicely. Not sure if they would be enough to recover psi so maybe voracity too. I also like Mental Discipline but without the auras…

So, what do you guys think? I can program most of it, but I was just wondering if it was worth it ;)

The idea seems really cool and I could see myself playing this. One point of concern I have is what the player would do with artifact weapons or even greater ego. From your current suggestion the power of the weapon does not change once you can get level 5 gems. you may want to make this scale really well but only allow you to upgrade once every 6 or 7 levels.

Well, most of the egos would continue to work like elemental or speed but you're right about artifacts, there's only one gem if I recall correctly...

We could always think on a few more but we'd still need a stroke of luck to find one

S'actually, at least, five artifact gems. Three don't do anything as a gem qua gem (i.e. the imbuing, it does nothing), while the other two are either rare or very late game finds. One of the non-imbue gems is also about the last piece of pre-victory loot you can find, heh.

As for th'class itself... if you can code it, code it :P More is always better, even if it isn't accepted into the main T4 campaign. I hear it'll be possible to add little mods (like individual classes, for example) without much difficulty at some point in the future.

Some of the talents are a lil'same-y (re: Deflect and chronomancy probability twisting), but that's nothing a bit of tweaking wouldn't fix. It'll be easier to refine things with an actual playable class to work with. The only thing I'd be worried about, is that it's another melee-centric psi class, which the mindslayer already is. Perhaps focus the class around bows, instead? The only tree below that would need tweaking would be the crystal edge tree, and even that only somewhat, at least if Push is a ranged thing.

Yes, a ranged psionicist would be nice, whether it's an archer type or a caster type. Right now the closest thing we have to a ranged psionicist is the Doomed class.

I'm a more melee kind of guy but maybe he could have more ranged abilities, yes
I also agree that a few talents are a bit close to existing ones, I'm lacking imagination

Maybe something focusing on the element currently chosen for the sword, like

Elemental prowess - All work on the element currently on the crystal sword

1) Elemental focus - Passive. Increases resistance and damage to element
2) Elemental Bolt - Active. Bolt of the current element, beam at level 3
3) Elemental Aura - Sustained. Damages everything around the player
4) ???

This could be an advanced tree.
