Just a note: having more of something does not always means performance goes down.
Objects are not processed every turns or whatever (obviously except recharging ones), so having piles of swords and armours on the ground changes nothing to the game speed. Save will be a tad bigger but not that much at all compared to the rest anyway.

As for ID, I have plans anyway

This still happens if you leave too much junk around on some levels...

Making junk something useful is an interest approach, but I don't like the idea of grinding resources out of junk to get/unlock stuff. I do like the idea of incorporating some randomness to the mix.
I want a shop where I can pay for egoing a vanilla item and give some use to my gems. Maybe you could get it for free too, but with a very high chance of getting your vanilla item destroyed. Using a specific gem could help getting a specific prefix/sufix, but randomness should play a high role in this enchanting gamble.
I know something like this will favor the scumming for vanilla items and such, but scumming shops is very similar and way more lame.

I also think that there should be an easier way to destroy items than 'd'ropping them in the world map. Sometimes you just want to clear the floor of a dungeon to make it easier to explore running.

Although I don't object to this idea, I'd like to remind people that non-unique items DO disappear anyway after a certain amount of turns spent offlevel.

It's rare that one returns to a level anyway. The only time items are an issue is when backtracking over a current level. The Maze is probably the worst for this.

I think it would make a significant difference if the autorun didn't stop twice for every item. It should stop only when on the item, not on the square next to it (unless there are plans to implement mimics).

Oh, also something related I suggested in chat but I'll bring up again - what about autopickup for gems, too? As an option, perhaps.
As gems are now a major source of money, autopicking them up makes sense.

Except if you're in the middle of a fight... It would have to be a zero turn action like money.

Personally I like getting to look at the pretty new gem tiles on the screen before picking them up :)

Seconded.

Also is this wrong place to mention that green gem * are very hard to see on the trollmire/old forest?

I'm pretty sure DG would implement it like this Gandolfo.
