Seriously, why has this continued on? Why come up with undescriptive names. Sure, the description of the difficulty is available on the right, but you cannot seriously suggest to me that difficulties should be named after animals. I still stick with my suggested naming as it is both descriptive and unoffensive. Sure, Veteran could be changed to Hardcore instead; however I still say that my naming scheme is better overall. This isn't ego or pig headedness speaking either...

Tutorial ? The Tutorial
Beginner ? x% lowered damage to player, y% raised healing to player, Extra Lives – No Unlocks
Standard ? Normal game play, Extra Lives
Hardcore ? Normal game play, No Lives
Deranged ? x% extra damage to player, y% less healing to player, lowered player rank

Alright, before this thread continues why don't we give it a pause. There is already a difficulty name change in the SVN, so DarkGod has seen this thread and probably made his final decision.

Ignoring the name, I would honestly play a hard/multi-lives mode. I find the current normal mode a little too easy, but I dislike the fake difficulty and repetitiveness of the single-life mode.

I HAVE IT!!!

All characters start on "normal" (hardcore) difficulty then you only get prompted when you die?

I actually had considered suggesting this time ago but decided not to, for some reason I expected it would generate a lot of criticism.
Anyway - I think DG already decided on the new names, so discussion now isn't very useful.

DarkGod has decided on Adventure and Roguelike, I think. Not perfect, but certainly an improvement in my opinion.
