Server stability?

Server stability?
I've noticed a couple times over the past few days that the online features of the game have stopped working.
Specifically, I lose connection to chat and the game is unable to detect Steam.
When I try to open http://te4.org/ingame-chat/connected I get a 504 Gateway Time-out error, so I know it's not my end that's the problem.

Server's most likely under heavy load since 1.5 came out, we're reliably hitting 200%+ users connected than we were before then!HunterZ wrote:I've noticed a couple times over the past few days that the online features of the game have stopped working.

Re: Server stability?
I figured the server wonkyness was because of the influx of players since 1.5. Looking now, there are 726 players having fun. If I remember, before 1.5, it was around 200. And this isn't even peak time in North America.
Also known as Boatshow, for some stupid reason.

I think DarkGod may need more donations of money as well as tears of pain.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.
Re: Server stability?
I've mentioned this jokingly in chat several times now, but I seriously think there needs to be a fundraiser to upgrade the servers so chat was more stable etc. Would this be realistic, DG?HousePet wrote:I think DarkGod may need more donations of money as well as tears of pain.
Maybe throw in some donation perks to arouse interest- like buy 2 get one 1 for vault spots, or $10 for a Bearscape portal generator, or whatever else. And yes, I'd totally chip in for a Bearscape-on-demand portal.
Re: Server stability?
Yes, let's make ToME P2W so I can have on demand T5 randarts.mori wrote: ...or $10 for a Bearscape portal generator, or whatever else. And yes, I'd totally chip in for a Bearscape-on-demand portal.
A little bit of a starters guide written by yours truly here.

Re: Server stability?
Bearscape portal was just a suggestion. Feel free to post other ideas instead of shooting down others.

As for the server, it's not a simple matter of capacity (though it cant hurt either) but also of architecture

Re: Server stability?
So you can't solve the problem just by downloading more RAM?darkgod wrote:Ahahmori wrote:I've mentioned this jokingly in chat several times now, but I seriously think there needs to be a fundraiser to upgrade the servers so chat was more stable etc. Would this be realistic, DG?HousePet wrote:I think DarkGod may need more donations of money as well as tears of pain.

Over the years I've had quite some people request being able to buy more slots or buy custom chat colors for outrageous amounts of money
Maybe someday I'll relinquish and let them give me moneyz

I figured it'd take a good chunk of change (and effort) to do any necessary upgrades and/or to roll out any necessary changes to your network architecture, but is it a cost that can be quantified? If so, I'd imagine it to be a target worth pursuing. The in-game community support is a pretty significant part of what makes ToME so unique and enjoyable, after all!
Promotion for the fundraiser wouldn't be too hard - posts on SA, Reddit, in-chat word of mouth, etc.
Re: Server stability?
Seems to have been going down most evenings now (Pacific time). Oh well, at least offline still works.
Re: Server stability?
It also restarts itself once a day.

Re: Server stability?
yes one restart per day is very normal as I coded it this way

Re: Server stability?
It must be set to restart every day around 8pm Pacific time then, because I seem to lose online connectivity around that time every day in Seattle.
Re: Server stability?
Well it's 7:24pm PST and the servers are down.HunterZ wrote:It must be set to restart every day around 8pm Pacific time then, because I seem to lose online connectivity around that time every day in Seattle.
It would be nice if this didn't happen during prime play time.
Or we got a warning it was going to happen.
Or there was a countdown to the servers being back.
Just sayin'.
