Certain classes carrying you through the game?
So I just died in the final boss fight on Insane with my Sun Paladin, it was a long fight but I couldn't kill Argoniel after killing Elandar. She just constantly healed up and I only did like 200-300 per attack (instead of like 2k-3k like on Elandar).
So now I'm thinking that the rest of the game was really really easy in comparison to High Peak. And maybe Sun Paladin just carried me through the game, but when push came to shove, I wasn't able to figure out how to win? Should I go back to Normal and try other classes? Figure out the game more? I really liked all the rare enemies on Insane, though, it was so fun :<

Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
Certain classes are definitely stronger in certain situations. Classes that can straight up just kill the final bosses or can at least stand toe to toe with them are going to have an advantage over those ones that can't in winning. You can certainly get carried to them but that doesn't mean you'll be able to beat them on others.
Regardless, I would say try to learn from your experience and figure out how it was that you were able to get as far as you did and how you can gain an advantage over the final bosses next time around.

Its amazing what the mind can come up with, but it shows talent to make something of it. - Davion Fuxa

The only class I've beaten the game with was Ogre Sun Paladin. Which felt like it could handle every situation well but it didn't really EXCEL at any one particular thing.
Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
Don't bosses on insane get extra talents? Maybe you just got really unluck with what Argoniel got.
Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
Certain classes can totally carry you, sure. I'd say it's less of a thing these days, but some of my earlier wins, that happened during earlier development, were just outright silly (the warden that reached the end of that late game fire run in less than a turn and did a few laps around the stuff at the bottom before they noticed being an obvious example, heh).
So far as learning to play less powerful/suited to you stuff, I'd mostly just suggest to keep doing whatever's getting you through the game until better practice sinks in by osmosis, ehehe. Play whatever counts as crazy stuff for your playstyle until you figure out what kills you when you're ballin' out of control, then play the less crazy stuff and don't do those things. Repeat as desired. Eventually stuff stops killing you, assuming you care enough to avoid doing said things, heh. Then you win 'cause you're not dead and everything else is. Sometimes the easiest way to learn best practice is to just repeatedly trip over worst practices until you run out of worst practices to trip over and all that's left is winning :V

The important thing is getting a range of 'tools' that win allow you to deal with any situation.
Looks like you needed something to deal with something outhealing your damage.

Also people usually try to keep a gloves of dispersion (or spellhunt remnants) to deal with all of the final bosses' sustains.
Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
I know that scenario and it took me a depressing long amount of time to figure out, but Elandar does drop something that might help in this situation.Selen wrote:So I just died in the final boss fight on Insane with my Sun Paladin, it was a long fight but I couldn't kill Argoniel after killing Elandar. sunpa is an extremely strong class since it does weapon damage and doesn't die easily, it's definitely top tier
anyway, sounds like you just had awful luck with argoniel's sustains/passives since she can generate with level 20+ thick skin/armor training/hardened core on insane and just be unkillable, though you probably could have done something - waiting 200 turns for the staff to charge for instance

Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
I think PM is the only class that can really faceroll through the game. Even the infamous Archmage requires a fair amount of thought to succeed on Insane. For what it's worth I suck at Sun Paladin and can't get past Dreadfell without dying on Insane while I have a much easier time with "weaker" classes like Doomed.
My wiki page, which contains a guide and resource compilation and class tier list.
Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
I wanted to equip the Staff Elandar dropped, but then I died
I was thinking of doing another Sun Paladin run because I found Champion's Will in High Peak... but I didn't make it to the Items Vault, sadly. But when I find another one, I will try to get revenge.

Re: Certain classes carrying you through the game?
I recently had something similar happen, and I feel kind of the same way. I played a summoner, and it was one of my more fun playthroughs. Stand behind a corner, chain summon monsters, watch everything die.
I get to the end fight and they're one shotting most of my summons, two hits max. It doesn't take long before I'm just trying to hide behind what scant line of sight there is, while that one guy blinks around the screen hitting me anyway.
I ended up losing four lives, and the character, because my summons just couldn't stay alive long enough to do any damage and/or protect me.

Were you a summoner? The trick in such a situation is to summon more than one a turn. Use that frantic summoning ability ending with a turtle, and abuse the hatchlings that come with fire drakes.Shaidyn wrote:I recently had something similar happen, and I feel kind of the same way. This was exactly my thought, the first and only time I faced them.
