So, I find one huge mistake I keep making is that I feel a need to prove my good build when I run into something nasty that kills me by going back and trying to kill it over and over again. I can't be the only one who does this, right?
Just had a rand Worm that Walks somehow do crazy damage against my speedy Shadowblade build that has been surviving superbly as a Yeek and wasted three lives before abandoning. I'm thinking that in the future I should really bail after the first time I'm unreasonably slain.
But in general, one of the biggest caveats of this game is watch out for randuniques, once or twice a game they will be impossible, so be prepared to run away. Anybody else got stories like this?

Worm that Walks is among the nastiest of the nasties. It requires a lot of attention to even run fast enough, if you try to fight it. It can be killed, of course.
Re: Rookie mistake: gotta kill that randunique!!
I found a regular elite lvl 27 Worm that walks just chilling with a few rare buddies on level 2 of old forest yesterday, and said to myself "ok, i'll come back later and deal with it".
Cleared both the maze and sandworm level, then thought it should be alright to go back to old forest.
Nope, barely made it out alive without killing anything lol
I guess i'll clear daikara and derth before going back

Yeah, after getting killed once with no real warning that I was about to die I was very careful the 2nd time. The 3rd time I said I'll tp away early after doing just a bit of damage and still with over half health and shield and try whittling him down, nope, died 2 rounds after tp. I realize now I should have a totem to remove diseases to use immediately after tp, if I ever give him a 4th try this game. But sitting on my last life that's not likely...cttw wrote:Worm that Walks is among the nastiest of the nasties. It requires a lot of attention to even run fast enough, if you try to fight it. But I have accomplished my goals with this character, unlocking three classes, so I just might... arrgh, I don't play Angband like this, why am I so obsessed with killing everything in this game, lol?!? Probably playing on Normal and nothing really challenging, so the one tough guy is pretty exciting and satisfying to bring down I guess.

Sometimes you have no choice. Like with the one that spawns in the fortress when you get enough energy for the farportal. You can't teleport in there, so if you start to fight and realize you are in over your head, you are screwed.
Lost 3 lives to Cyreta the unique Worm That Walks with my cold focused skeleton Archmage. I was pulling out every trick in the book, using an amulet to summon a vampire to absorb the ridiculous burst spells, using ice form and vapor to heal myself, using retch from a lantern to heal myself, using the walls and corners and AOE. I just kept getting nailed for hundreds of points of damage with each attack and couldn't hurt it fast enough. And the melee attacks could kill me in a single turn if they got lucky crits. Shields got ripped apart so fast.
Finally on the fourth try the AI failed Cyreta and they used their skill rotation unwisely several times in a row, chose to walk instead of attack, I got some lucky damage teleports back onto him, and I bursted them down. Now it really is roguelike because I have zero lives left.

"You could skip it, i think it drops 0 xp and 1 copper [at most], you are better off selling oxygen to beggars to become rich."

My usual process:
Die. "What?!? Wow everything else has been dropping like flies, I was taken off guard."
Return, die again. "Oh you little $%$@#%@#! This guy is full on unfair. But there are really hard enemies at the end of the game so I have to be able to take on anything."
Return again, die yet again. "NEARGH! MY NERD RAGE! I hate this game! I'm never playing again! Grr! ...*30 seconds later* Maybe I'll just try avoiding him. Or maybe... yes, if I just make sure I keep my wild infusion ready for his stun, I should be able to..."
You know what comes next.

Re: Rookie mistake: gotta kill that randunique!!
I do it every time.
The game-play make me do it!
Since the beginning , at normal difficulty, we can obliterate rare. So when one violet thingy is over leveled, or have some unique power, I cannot comprehend I have to flee.
I fault the game, because since the beginning, and numerous death against Bill or the Shade, I learned to respect Boss. They can kill me, I know that, I learned caution in front of them.
But I killed so much rares, I must kill that one. I was just unlucky.
