Holidays In Eyal

#1 Post by Red »

So the month of holidays rolls around, the Madrigol Dinners have begun, and all in all it's Crhistmas where I am. Which, naturally, makes me think about a videogame that consists of murdering your way to saving the whole world, then murdering whatever's left alive.

But it does make me think-for all we know of Eyal's history (not that much), we know even less about the modern culture. We know the Zigur sympathies and antimagic tendencies, the general fear of attack and all that, but what about holidays? Does Last Hope celebrate King Toknor's birth, coronation, or death? Does Zigur have orgies on the solstices? Are there any magically charged days where the students of Angolwen are let free from their studies and tutoring to mingle amongst one another while the full mages get wasted on magically enhanced booze? Do the elves have holidays that occur biannually, or once a decade, or even longer, because of how long they live? Did Aluin the Fallen not show up the first time in Trollmire because he was too busy partying some eastern holiday?
I'm not crying. I'm offering a sacrifice to DarkGod in hopes he'll show favor to me.

It hasn't worked yet.

Zigur don't have orgies. They sit in cold water and think of all the evil magic in the world. After that they have a refreshing cold shower (under a natural waterfall of course) and reflect on how pure nature is and how they must not think of the corrupt and evil magic and the impure thoughts it generates.

I figured what with their violent side amd the drugs they have so much of it literally turns them part mushroom they wouldn't be so ascetic. But hey, just goes to show what I know.

What about everyone else? Does Derth have any celebrated heroes? Iron Throne? Etc.?

Because I was bored, some holidays I just made up:

Demons have the Time of Gratitude, a ceremony where they remember the good Urh'Rok's done for them by trying to emulate how the events of their salvation played out. They do this by first, separating into small groups based on their imp-subrace (onyx, emerald, ruby) and trying to perform some task while under some form of handicap, then getting back together into one cohesive group and performing the same task together, removing the handicap (in recognition of how imps first tried to struggle separately for survival under the oppressive dust storms, then became reunited and prosperous). In pre-industrial times, this usually involved one day of feast with only one subspecies' traditional recipes and ingredients, with half the ingredients (randomly chosen) banned from the dish, then a second day of feast where everyone in the community contributed; in their pre-Spellblaze time of wealth, it usually consisted of trying to build something at an office party when drunk, then getting back together and being remarkably productive the next day at work. These days, it's separated very differently between administrative "civilians" and Fearscape laborers. Civilians (which, everyone contributes to the war effort, but some (such as Mutilators and Imp Clerks) tend to be more behind the scenes and do more white-collar work) spend a day split up into sub-racial groups and trying to perform some sort of creative effort while fasting for the whole day before going back to their cooperative workspaces, while laborers (who tend to be altered into very role-specific subraces) are effectively given a day off to relax together in civilian areas, showing them how peaceful and gentle Urh'Rok's vision for his children was, and emphasize what they're fighting to reclaim by conquering Eyal.

Dwarves have four Days of Personal Finance per year, legally mandated by the Empire as days for workers to get their own investments and debts in order. There is zero sentiment attached to them, but dwarves do get the days off of work, and those whose checkbooks are already balanced typically spend the day drunk.

...and there was a third here, but it's a bit of a spoiler for 1.3. I'll post it a few days after that releases, once everyone's gotten a chance to read the lore in it.
