So a poll for ToME or .. Not Tome ? seriously ...

Well at least it is obvious what Mr Doull thinks .. "please please make any game win but not tome!" or something along that line.
All the while the actual poll has been shown to be a huge travesty; it's not a vote anymore, it's a contest between 3 voting-bots .. how fun :/
I must say I'm very disappointed about this whole thing...

DG, lower than that, there's a real vote...
Re: So a poll for ToME or .. Not Tome ? seriously ...
The new poll is meant as a joke. I'm not sure Andrew realises that the main poll is already a joke :-/
Re: So a poll for ToME or .. Not Tome ? seriously ...
If you are not pissing someone off, you are not doing anything worthwhile.
Re: So a poll for ToME or .. Not Tome ? seriously ...
I know it's a joke; jokes can still be felt as rude, given the track record of andrew against tome it's rather easy to actually
But hey I'm not a man to hold a grudge, so whatever; we've got a way more interresting poll going on that is not cheated: http://te4.org/blogs/darkgod/2013/12/ne ... day-voting

It's disapointing that the ascii rl of the year is that much abused by votingbots .
Because most popular boards are mentionning that poll it would attract attention of people not used to RL games , i always thought that poll was a good idea to show people the existence of many good titles they may never have heard about and that by noticing some names in the list they would be curious and give a look.
But unfortunately with no way to stop any vote abuse, it sadly degenerated into the votingbot contest we all see happened, and that's what now people will remember each time they will see the ascii rl of the year poll "oh that's the votingbot contest" and not what it was really about.

So somebody cheated? That is unacceptable. I can't understand why they'd want to. The winner doesn't even get a prize, do they?

Re: So a poll for ToME or .. Not Tome ? seriously ...
Nobody knows who cheated. But the result is more than questionnable. Indeed, the "winner" (noxico) got 5059 votes (5011 for ToME), while its official forum has 39 registered users and a grand total of 120 threads and 671 posts...
The result is not so important, but it is really a shame and, I agree, definitely unacceptable to have such attitudes completely debase this poll and lampoon the roguelike community.

After the last time, I'd wondered what events would shape the poll this year---but the whole Noxico angle wound up quite an unfortunate surprise.
Hopefully, however it gets wrangled, next year thing along these lines winds up better. Maybe something could be situated with the IndieDb folks or something seeing as how that seems to have worked well enough and also deals with "niche" content?

apparently noxico is a roguelike (if you can call it that) about pr0n? Im not surprised there were bots involved, everyone going to - sites probably got hijacked by some malware and voted without their knowledge lol
Re: So a poll for ToME or .. Not Tome ? seriously ...
ToME and ADOM had cheated votes too. I've seen vote-tracking from this year that shows unquestionable bot-voting for both games. Unfortunately some fans are dicks, and that goes for all communities. I'm quite certain that the Noxico votes come from someone who is sick of seeing the pointless vote-rigging every year. The Revanchist wrote:So somebody cheated? That is unacceptable. I'm fairly sure ToME would win in a fair fight regardless, but as it stands community behaviour is stopping that from being an option.

We can rest assured that we know what the best game was. There won't be any cheating there!

Dunno about IndieDB, but if the next year poll is improved, what I'd like to see is voting broken down into categories. If part of the idea is to spread awareness of roguelikes, not just a 'favorite' (which a few heavy hitters will always dominate, be it Tome, Adom, Crawl, or some other major entity.) splitting things down to give attention to things like 'best new roguelike', and 'best graphics', 'most innovative concepts', 'unique storyline', 'easiest to learn', and as many other categories as one can think of.getter77 wrote:Hopefully, however it gets wrangled, next year thing along these lines winds up better. It provides more attention for all the things that AREN'T just huge massive industry giants like ToME.
Just my 2 cents...

Yes, some categories in which the big guns of the genre aren't part of them could help, by example a "new RL of the year" category listing only RL that were created in the year, or some genre specific like 'best sci RL, best survival RL, best etc..."
That would help in bringing more awareness to games that are really great but do not benefit of the media coverage of a ToME4, an Adom or a DCSS
But all would be nullified if there's no improvement in the vote system and any votingbots can completely break it again.

Something as simple as one vote (per category) per IP would be easy, and make it more challenging (not impossible) to cheat.
So would captchas, or requiring some form of account be produced, or some combination of the above.
Stack the first with the second and you make it enough trouble that no one is going to bother to try and bot the poll.
