Chinese problems, mainly about donating

#1 Post by IvenGray »

I really like Tale of Maj'Eyal. But since I am a Chinese, it's really hard for me to donate.
Here is the thing, ordinary people in Chinese mainland don't use Paypal. We do have some similar online paying methods, like Alipay, but we don't use Paypal. It's quite troublesome to found and keep a Paypal account in China, it seems especially so when one has no other uses of the account.
I'm in the last year of the university, and after the graduation next year some of my classmates will go abroad for postgraduate programs, so maybe I can ask for their help by then to solve this problem personally. But since this solution takes much time, and since this problem happens to other guys like me in China as well, I decided to make a proposal here.
Many people in China plays ToME4. For example, the subforum of ToME4 on 3DMgame(one of the main game websites in China) have over 120000 posts on about 3500 topics. This means there are many potential donators in China. However, there are several things that stops Chinese players from donating, and Paypal problem is definitely one of them. So, Darkgod, I think maybe you can find some Chinese agent to handle this donation issue and let us be able to donate in an indirect way. I remember seeing some guys published a Chinese version of the ToME4, maybe it's a good idea to connect them.
The current situation in China is that most players plays an undonated version, or a cracked version to enjoy donator features. China 's fame for piracy must have been spread internationally, I guess. That being said, there are still some sincere fans of this game, and I think they would like and deserve an available donating method. And I think it's potentially profitable as well, though I'm not sure to which extent can the potential be realized. I don't know if this will turn out to be profitable enough to worth the trouble, but if there is an indirect donating method to be designed, here are some of my suggestions:

-The threshold to unlock donator features(actually, I don't know if there really is one) might need to be appropriately lowered. Ordinary Chinese people earn 1000RMB at most slightly easier, if not harder, than western people earn 1000 euros or 1000 dollars. So, the lower the threshold, the more people willing to donate.
-Maybe some new donator features for people like Chinese, to make them more willing to donate. In other games, the most powerful method to discourage piracy is online features. Don't know if ToME can try some sorts of similar things?
-Can't come up with more thoughts. Ask those translators, they are more experienced in these kind of things.

ToME has been greenlit. Unless for some reason people in China cant / wont / dont use Steam it wont be long before you can donate through steam.

I don't think it is stupid. I love Steam but I know there are a lot of people who dislike Steam and won't use it. Those could still donate if there was a Chinese payment processor that worked for darkgod. I think it would be very worthwhile to do this (if possible) because they have such a big community already, it might be worth a good chunk of money.

It would also be a good idea to externalize the strings into a translation file so that the Chinese community can maintain their own translation and update it as needed.

Thanks, it's good to hear people wish to donate in china :)

I've looked into a payment processor in China last year but it mostly very foreigner-hostile to setup so I abandoned :/ I could check if things look better now though.
Also yeah, steam will come soon, if you can use steam it would work too
[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD
