display DPS of weapons ?

#1 Post by wolfis2 »

Hi guys, sorry for the noob question.

Is there a way to display DPS on weapons (rather than just weapon damage) ?

Maybe an addon or something ?

DPS means damage per second, DPT would be more accurate since it's a turn based game ;)

And yes, your character sheet lists the damage you'll do each hit

The character sheet shows "damage" which is the base value per hit, without any elemental bonuses, or critical hits, or talents that multiply damage, or lots more stuff, against unarmored foes.

Your actual damage output may vary considerably based on other factors such as the opponent's armor, your APR (armor penetration), critical hits, the enemy's physical/all resistance, elemental bonuses, elemental conversion, the enemy's resistance to THAT element, etc. When in doubt, actually try both weapons and see how they perform in "real life".

A good short answer for why there's no overall figure would be that DPT would be intensely misleading.

While, yes, say, gloves have really good damage per turn(multiple actions), they perform poorly against high armor due to relatively low base power(especially at some points in the game) and Armor Penetration. Many weapons use a lot of elemental effects, which show great damage per turn potential right up until something strongly resists that element. Some weapons utilize skills randomly-which would give a misleading impact to DPT(Yes, they average pretty good damage...but in practice, it's more like a critical hit effect, and very random. You can't just treat it like averaged damage, because it's so uncommon and spikes your damage so much.) Resistance penetration-one of the most important factors for dealing damage in the lategame-is not shown at all in such a calculation, because how could it be? Etc.

This isn't to say such a value couldn't be useful, don't get me wrong...but it's not actually that big of a deal. One of the thing ToME generally goes with is assuming basic user competence-if you can't figure out, roughly, the damage potential of your weapon, you're probably going to die when failing to judge the damage potential of your enemy. There's no way to make a nice round damage per turn figure for that.
