Wow this game is amazing

#1 Post by noxnoctum »

Seriously. I came here straight from Dredmor looking for something a bit "grittier" and with more options for character building and heard good things about ToME (plus it wasn't ASCII which I have trouble getting past)... anyways, wow!

Seriously I just spent like 4 hours huddled tensely in front of my computer just praying inside for the Phase Door to put right next to those Crystal things so I could slice them in half before getting frozen and obliterated  (so refreshing to play a game that's actually difficult and doesn't hold your hand)

It says a lot when I feel more drawn into the experience playing a 2d game with sprites and no animations then I do playing most modern 3d RPGs. (great music by the way)

By the way, never had so much fun playing a rogue class before. The shadowblade class is just a blast. I love all the options you're given for just mobility. Great fun dancing around an enemy then jumping in then jumping back off while your shield is on cooldown. So much fun. Right now I'm going heavily with magic + cunning since they overlap somewhat (shadow combat + shadow step benefit from points in magic from what I see)

Anyways, great stuff. thanks for the fun.

Yeah, Dredmor is pretty awesome, but this game is definitely more "roguelike". Tons of options, unlockable everything, enough stats to make randomized equipment interesting, and pretty damn cool character classes.

The music is something I was surprised by. I eventually turned the volume down because hearing it loop for too long got a little bleh, but it gives you an "epic" feel when you're trampling around a dungeon or something.

But yeah, good game. ^.^

Did I mention this game is hard? I thought I was doing pretty well till I ran into a group of air elementals which just completely owned me. I teleported away from one pack of 3 of them just to land by another :(

if it was easy it would be boring, the !!FUN!! is in the journey and the close calls

although from the looks of it, i would think you went in derth, just note that this is a bad place to go after getting to level 12, feel free to save up +lightning resist gear, sort of trivializes them if you get enough (well so does antimagic shield but that requires a more or less equally damaging trial to get).

also note that air elementals had -30% fire resist last i check, KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Oh yes I didn't mean it in a bad way... like I said it's very refreshing after the cakewalk that 95% of modern games are.

Ran into this enormous fort/dungeon on Old Forest 3 with my temporal warden. My game starting lagging so I thought I just needed a restart... that is until I started exploring aformentioned fort . I spent about an hour in there clearing only about 1/4 of it and have probably killed ~80 assassins, thieves, and trolls. Place is SWARMED. (got a ton of loot too though).

Not much of a challenge with my pure archer warden though. I just spam my abilities then hit the "banish" button when they get a bit too close 8) . If I need to back up for a reload I just use my speed rune and I'm good to go ;).

One thing i noticed though, my spells keep fizzling despite my paradox only being at 175. What could be causing that? I don't have any arcane disrupting items equipped.

You may be wearing too much heavy armor. Fatigue increases Paradox for the purposes of failure/anomaly/backfire chances rather than increasing spell costs, because it doesn't make sense that the amount of armor you are wearing would change how much damage to spacetime your abilities do.
<Ferret> The Spellblaze was like a nuclear disaster apparently: ammo became the "real" currency.

I think fatigue is considered after the paradox threshold for failures (200). It could be that you are using high paradox cost abilities that would push paradox above the threshold, and that is triggering the failure.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

Nah, the % from fatigue is factored into the displayed chances.

You mentioned a vault, dimensional step (and other teleports) will fizzle around a no teleport zone.
