First impressions

#1 Post by 3iff »

I've been looking for a 'modern' roguetype game and have to say this is impressive.

Once I got past some startup difficulties (game using the wrongs screensize parameters and locking up) I have managed to survive the first quest and return back to the town in one piece without dying. AT least I don't have to worry about starving to death!

There are a MASS of talents/skills to deal with which is mind-boggling and expansive. I'm sure to have LOTS of questions soon.

I did notice that selling stuff to shops gets only 10% or so of the price they subsequently sell it for. How do I increase the price I get for selling stuff...if that's possible?

Still pretty overwhelmed by the variation in weapons/armour/items and I'm sure I still don't understand most of the items/options. Is there somewhere that explains things in more detail that avoids spoilers?

A complaint: When regsitering, I was asked about an item of in-game knowledge...pretty tricky for someone new to the game...I did pass the test though.

Hi and welcome!

The question requiring in-game knowledge is bot-protection. We've had some bad trouble in the past and this seems to fix it whilst not excluding people (you can get the answer very easily).

Any start-up problems you've had are worth hearing about in detail. DarkGod is always trying to improve the game, and first-use experiences are invaluable.

Shop prices are unchangeable. This is just how the economy of Maj'Eyal works. Gold isn't too important in the game though, apart from the odd thing you might spot in a shop.

There is a lot of detail to the game, and it can be overwhelming. The tutorials help a bit with some aspects. Pretty much everything is explained in the tooltips if you're patient enough to read them all and put the info together. It's worth hearing what's not obvious though and what early game instructions can be improved. Plus folks here are always happy to give individual advice.

I just found the Cornac Fighter walkthrough. It made a lot of sense and helps clarify many of the things I found last night.

I do like the fact that items have multiple varying powers/bonuses. Weighing up which one is 'better' is quite an interesting experience.

I think I'm going to enjoy this...

Get ready for a LOT more confusion as you get into the more advanced classes. Don't worry, though. It's the good confusion of having tons of options available and needing to sift through them, weigh them against each other, and often experiment around/look for advice on builds to figure out which you prefer. One of the things I seriously doubted when I first started, but see the deep wisdom of now that I'm deep in the game, is that almost all the classes and several races start locked. This forces you to take some time playing around with a few classes before more, more complex, classes and races are thrown at you. Had I jumped right into a dwarf wyrmic or skeleton mindslayer class, I'd have drowned deep in confusion and probably given up quickly. Going through alchemist before getting into archmage, and then summoners, and wyrmics, and necromancers, and brawlers, and ... anyway, it was a good, slow, time-consuming process, which also gave me TONS of goals to achieve with characters to unlock things.

If you get lost/confused/uncertain about anything, don't be afraid to ask on the forums or in the chat (activate by pressing space). I've found tons of help and a very friendly community in both places, and hope to provide the same while I'm here.

Oh, and 3iff, welcome to Tales of Maj'Eyal! :D

Thanks for the welcome.

Typically for me, I start a game not knowing what I'm doing and do quite well. I read advice and try to do things 'better' and wind up playing worse and getting myself killed.

Two nights ago I took on Shade and although he iced me a few times I killed him. Last night I was attacked by him an a skeleton warrior. I got killed twice before I gave up for the night.
I realise now I had no cold protection...stupid.

I also had 2 quest 'idiots' die on me. That never happened the first time either....ah well.
(Was also playing on Normal the second time instead of Easier!, so that's why I had problems.)

You're right about the locked-down classes. I'm having more than enough problems with a human warrior. Although I might try an Alchemist next time I'll be leaving those exotic beasts for a later time.

I'm just starting playing TOME again, and have had a few of the same experiences.

That bulwark tutorial is invaluable. It gets you into the game, and lets you figure out the early stuff without telling you exactly what to do.

I'm thinking of trying to add to documentation on the wiki - as it is now, it's lacking a little.
