don't understand speed

#1 Post by taylor »

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can give me some help understanding how speed works in ToME4. I'm a new player and I'm still wrapping my head around lots of pieces in this game, but speed is one that eludes me. Obviously increased speed will work to my advantage, but how exactly? What determines how many actions/attacks I get before the enemy retaliates. I assumed at the beginning that I got one, they got one, but that's not always the case. What things are affected by speed and is their a difference between movement speed and action/attack speed? How can I use my speed stats when trying to plan my next combat move? Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

While I consider myself to be a rather new player myself I think I can explain the speed bit for you. ToME has four speeds that I'm aware of, and this is how they work:

Assume that any action (move/attack/cast spell/etc) costs 1000 'action points'

Global Speed: Starts at 100%. Gives you 1000 'action points' to do things with at 100%. 2000 at 200%, 500 at 50%, etc.

Move Speed: Starts at 0%. at 0%, moving costs 1000, at 100%, moving costs 500 (two moves per turn), at 1000% (hello movement infusion). moving costs ~90 (~10 moves per turn).

math bit: action cost = 1000/(1+(move bonus/100))

Attack Speed, Spell Speed: same as above, swapping move for attack/spell

So, for an attack speed bonus of 20% it would be 1000/(1+(20/100)) or 833 which means that against an un-bonused opponent you will attack roughly 5 times for every 4 they do.

Ok, think that's it. I'll sit and wait now for someone to correct me :D
