dumb question - is tome4 an rpg or an mmorpg?

Hi all,
I saw the site te4.org and could not understand whether the game is just an RPG or an MMORPG. The reason is at the start of the page it says :-

Players
56 players are currently having fun. Join Them!

So guess its an MMORPG

Nope, it's just an RPG. The count is the number of people that are logged into their online profile (which is used to sync characters between computers among other things) while playing.

The only interaction between players is through the chat function, which lets you talk to people and link items/creatures you encounter, so other people can look at them. That and the profile sync is the only thing not completely local, unlike an MMO which usually has most of the game code on someone else's computer. Not even remotely an MMO, RPG or otherwise.

T4's a singleplayer roguelike. It just happens to have a lil'bit of extra functionality if you're connected to th'net and logged in.

hmmm.... ok. that is cool. I guess it'll take time to get my head wrapped around it a bit. I could see some potential.

I wonder if it would be hard to port Tome4 to multiplayer...

Really, really, really, really, really, really hard.

What I've been told is that you don't convert a game to multiplayer, you rebuild it from the ground up.

There was a multiplayer module in earlier betas. It was only displaying a kobold in ASCII mode, but still...

Yeah it's hard, probably impossible really, T4 is jsut not designed that way.

And no there was no multiplayer module, there was (and still is, it only appears with cheat mode enabled) a *realtime* module, solo play but realtime

I call it a MSORPG. Massively Single-player On/offline Role-Playing Game.
