beta 7: mini-map and stat display

#1 Post by ushumgal »

I really like the new placement of the mini-map on the upper left, where it doesn't obscure any of the regular map. But is there any way we could have the stats display back as well? Maybe I'm lazy, but I have having to press SHIFT+C every time I want to check them, and it's nice to be able to see your current stats when on the screen for assigning talent points.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Fourth'd

It could also be very handy to have a status notifications under the player stats for
Stealth
Invisible
Spotted

Although there may be limited room for this sort of feature and the mini map and the stat display on low resolution setups, but there is a huge empty space on the sidebar on larger resolutions, so these sort of things as interface options would be great.

as a long term goal perhaps exactly what is displayed there could be chosen from a submenu much like the display window options in tome 2.X with those on 2560x1600 unlocking a raft of submenu's for everything but the kitchen sink, and those on 640x480 keeping the bare essentials changing in and out as relevant

As long as there's still room for the status effects. It's nice to not have to assign of one the first 12 hotkeys to the sustained effects you always keep on in order to know what's on and off on the main view.

RE:Elkan
I do miss the custom interface of Angband and ToME 2. I was really nice for watching movies while I played the game as I could build an interface around video box in the corner.

Indeed, I'm also a long standing wow verteran and with the raft of UI mods I'm quite used to be able to put my UI elements wherever the hell I feel like it at the time :D I'm spoilt, I know; but it is nice to have the option. and whilst I dont expect that level of customisation form tome 4 - at least not for a long time, being able to choose which status elements are or are not displayed would be cool. A good example being that at 2560x1600 and 16x16 character display there is no need for the minimap until mid-late game as the central display is larger by far than the dungeon maps so i'd probably disable it and use the space for say, recently viewed monsters, or the contents of my quiver, a list of sustains or what have you. (although realisticly there is so much space at that resolution you can probably keep the minimap anyway.

That kind of side tracks to the widescreen resolutions thread but I find at that sort of resolution it would be quite easy to have all three groups of hot keys on screen at once at the bottom without being cluttered.

I'm having a hard time feeling your pain at having a minimap clutter up your monstrosity of a monitor ;). I'm playing this on a 6yo laptop that chirps like a dying squirrel from time to time!

It is a lonely pain, one that few can truly understand or appreciate, but thus must I suffer for my art! :P In all seriousness, it was just to illustrate that sometimes some UI elements can be quite redundant, and others can be more necessary. in actuality with this monitor size, yes I could probably tick the box for every single feature and still have enough screen real estate left over for a jaunty drawing of Urist McDwarf carving a microcline statue of a mastercrafted roguelike, but this UI customisation feature would be of far more practical use to someone on a much more limited resolution, so they can pick the features they refer to most often.

The thread opened on the them of "Add this into the UI" but it didn't give too much thought to the minimum resolutions where it couldn't be made to fit, whereas I would push more in the direction of "let us choose, to a degree which elements we have in our UI on a per system, or even per session basis"

I appreciate of course that this is vastly more work, and I don't imagine for a moment its a quick or easy fix, but hey, if you don't ask, you don't get, right?

I just wanted to give this a wee bump, since I noticed that we still cannot see the basic stats on the left-hand bar in beta 8.

Has this been overlooked, not yet implemented, or has the idea of putting the stats back there been rejected?

Just wondering! :)
