Combat questions

#1 Post by greycat »

Quite often, when I kill a monster, it still hits me. For example:

Code: Select all

Zob misses war bear.
Zob hits war bear for 15.00 physical damage.
Zob hits war bear for 14.23 fire damage.
Zob killed war bear!
War bear uses Stun.
War bear hits Zob for 8.25 physical damage.
Zob is stunned!
Zob is not stunned anymore.
Maybe not the best example, because of the lingering Flame damage at the same time I'm hitting it with a stick. But I've seen similar behavior a lot.

Is this by design? Do monsters attack you simultaneously to your attack, instead of the much more traditional roguelike way of "I hit you, then if you're still alive, you hit me"? Or is there some weird bug?

This should only happen with DOTs like Flame. If not it's a bug :)

I think it just looks like it hits you because any damage taken due to say poison is credited to the monster (the copperhead snake poisons you for 12.8 damage) or something. Still, I'd say that in itself is probably a mild bug.

Hmm... so what's actually happening is: I'm hitting the monster. Then the monster is hitting me. Then the lingering effects (Flame in this case) are hitting the monster, and killing it.

But the game is showing the messages out of order.

By the way, I think I've also observed this with things like Shield Pummel, where you make multiple attacks. I'll make two hits on the monster, killing it with the second one; and then the monster will hit me. Or at least that's what the messages say. If it's like the Flame case, then I suspect what's really happening is that I'm hitting it once, then it's hitting me, then I'm getting my second hit in, which kills it.

See I don't think that the attacks are being listed out of order. I think that damage that is truly being done you by flame or poison or whatever is being attributed to the monster incorrectly. I could be wrong though.

Code: Select all

Notintheface uses Shield Pummel.
Notintheface performs a critical strike!
Notintheface hits giant fire ant for 51.51 physical damage.
Giant fire ant hits Notintheface for 5.00 fire damage.
The burst of heat destroys your scroll of phase door!
Notintheface hits giant fire ant for 30.94 physical damage.
Giant fire ant hits Notintheface for 5.00 fire damage.
The burst of heat destroys your scroll of magic mapping!
Giant fire ant is stunned!
Here's another one. Although in this case, it appears there is some sort of passive retaliation damage that the monster is doing without actually hitting me.

Please, for the love of god, someone tell me how a warrior can prevent this item loss. PLEASE. I can't outrun anything, and I can't chuck daggers at things without having to go through a massively time-consuming unequip/wield cycle (both real-life time and in-game time; ToME 4 does not make it easy to swap between two weapons!), and I can't stun things without hitting them, and apparently hitting them still destroys all my items!

I think I was unclear. I meant to say "I can't chuck daggers at things. There is no throw-weapons-without-swapping-equipment capability. And swapping equipment (to a sling or what-have-you) takes an enormous amount of time (both real-life and in-game), meaning by the time you've done it, the monster's already eating your face, and it was a real pain in the ass to manage all those key presses too."

Edit: "... key presses, and the mental time and effort spent actually looking at your equipment, since you can't just autopilot anything equipment-related, because the letters are not constant. You actually have to read it."

I plan to have a "2nd weapon set" with a quick swap key.

And yes destruction chance should be lower
