This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...

Re: This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...
i disagree.
it doesn't seem to me this game is so umbalanced or deadly, at least in the ordinary play.
It may happen sometimes some occurencies of bad luck / instagib, but they are (IMHO) normal in a sistem this complex and rich
I think you are narrowing too much your perception of problems.

Really? Just copped my first instance of this: a lvl 38 patchwork troll in Bills Lair. While I'm lvl 5 not 6 & I haven't pumped just armour & shield wall (which I'd find a bit dull anyway), I'm not sure it'd make a difference. It's hitting me for a hundred a round, I suspect it'd still be damaging me quicker then I can heal & I'd barely be dented it. With the right equipment I guess it would be.jenx wrote:Lvl 6 bulwark can take them all easily, including patchwork troll. Just pump armor and str, and shield wall, nothing else.
Re: This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...
Yes. Download my verbose armor add one, pump only armour and shield wall, garden and balanced weapon and see how little melee affects you. Mind you, lots of other stuff will kill you...

Are "garden" and "balanced weapon" talents that your add-on introduced? I don't recognize those.
Re: This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...
Balanced is just that green weapon ego. It's actually quite useful, gives a decent bit of accuracy and defense. Can be pretty major in the early game.
Garden... garden I'm not sure about
Garden... garden I'm not sure about

I think he meant guardin'. Probably with the Block talent.

Just noticed this thead on the DCSS forums, it talks a lot about experienced roguelike players' perspectives on ToME.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

O_o ... well. Maybe I should try that. God knows everything else I tried failed. From that thread wrote:I wanted to unlock Marauder for some time now, and I went ahead and read the spoilers on how to do that, so I said; You know, I'll go for a rogue with a two-handed weapon since they deal more damage than one handed ones. Took lots of tries. Finally dealt 642 damage to a rat with My 17 level Dwarf Rogue wielding Bill's Trunk while stealthed for the bonus critical damage of shadowstrike.
Re: This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...
Yeah, I did something very similar to that for my unlock, though I didn't get a spoiler for it(It's just not too hard to think of, if you look for the fastest way to unlock long enough).
Worked pretty well...the character is of course utterly useless and will die a lot getting there, but it does work. Venomous Strike makes it far, far faster(Get two poisons on someone, then have them run into a poisoning trap, so that you get the three-poisons multiplier easily, is the optimal way to do that. Insidious Poison infusions work too.).

thanks for this link. I've read it and it confirms the sorts of balance issues I think Tome currently has.bricks wrote:Just noticed this thead on the DCSS forums, it talks a lot about experienced roguelike players' perspectives on ToME.

Oh. Well... then maybe I'm doomed never to have Marauder unlocked, ever. I don't play in multiple-life mode.SageAcrin wrote:Worked pretty well...the character is of course utterly useless and will die a lot getting there [...]
Re: This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...
It's not that hard, and you can use two daggers if you want. MAx crit from shadows, add category point to dual-weapons, to increase off hand damage > 100%, and then either just level up and get lots of %phy damage increase, or use poisons tree with an insidious weapon. This gets you three poisons onto a critter, then wham for 300% plus damage. Make sure you attack something with lots of hp, otherwise your main hand will kill it first and then your offhand won't be needed. Some people also equip a sling in main hand, just for this reason, to make sure it does little damage and the offhand crits for 600+.greycat wrote:Oh. Quite a bit is out dated though.jenx wrote:thanks for this link. I've read it and it confirms the sorts of balance issues I think Tome currently has.
Still that shows that progress is being made.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.

ARRRGGGGHHHHH - Just had my first encounter in dreamscape and very promising lvl 25 Skellie Brawler was massacred - I'm close to giving up on b42 - is there an addon to kill off all solipsets?
http://te4.org/characters/2460/tome/825 ... 953628fa86
Dreamscape illustrates the unbalanced nature of the game - I don't even know what it is, and no one in chat was much help. I just kept getting copies of myself, I used shields and heals and then died. I couldn't hit the critter (he was in far portal).
How does a character that is thumping everything meet a character of only slighter higher level and then is massacred, with no ability to even score damage on the thing?
It just makes no sense and makes for miserable game playing experience.
I only play rogue nowadays as I hate multiple lives, so I play carefully and prepare well. But nothing prepares you for this.
What is most frustrating is that one can't get any information about dreamscape in the game. I looked at the talents of the npc but I couldn't figure out how it works.

Re: This sort of thing makes the game unbalanced...
Dreamscape's definitely an interesting idea that needs some serious work
It's rare enough and information scarce enough that when you (fairly rarely, from my experiences so far) encounter it, it's a complete and total blindside that's probably going to instapop you. Nasty stuff, for all that the alternative combat or whatever's going on in there is pretty innovative, especially as roguelikes go. Mostly needs a hefty dose of "WTF is going on!?" injected into it, and a couple of sanity checks.
I'm not entirely sure what's been done to it in the SVN, but hopefully it'll be more sane come b43. In the mean time, you should definitely be able to comment out solipsists without too much effort, I think, if you want to. Or at least disable dreamscape, heh. Just replace it with, I'unno, golem taunt or somethin'.
