You mean kinda like the little ascii dude in the background of the main menu when you first load ToME? He (she?) seems pretty bad-ass--I wonder what's behind its actions...
No, I mean consider the situation where you have a lot of enemies to kill:

Code: Select all

___|ss
 @ssssss
'''''|s
I have to play with the mouse because of the way my laptop keyboard is laid out (not very well). So I'll end up clicking 100s of times in this fight.

Now you can just hold down the right arrow, but the danger is that at the end your character flies off to the right or you miss a "significant event" (as I'll describe later) and get a little too close to death because of it. However if the gap is on a diagonal then there is no diagonal arrow on my laptop, so it's back to the mouse. It is a grind.

I'm just saying, you 'CTRL+click' on a creature and it will fight until one of the following conditions is met:
- the creature dies
- you see another creature
- you reach "low hp" (hp/2?)
- you are poisoned or suffer another affliction
- a talent/infusion becomes available
- a talent/infusion wears off

This could turn 100 clicks into 10, especially in situations where you outmatch the creatures you are facing and do not need to worry about maximizing your talents.

I won't say that your idea is without merit (UI improvements are always good), but the situation described in this quote is actually rare in ToME4. It pretty much only happens in the Old Forest, when you run into an insect nest as a melee class. In any other zone, I could never see myself wanting to use such a feature.

Indeed, especially as talents get used and come off cooldown so often. ToME4 meleers are not designed to be played in the "hold down arrow key" way like in other roguelikes.

Haha, Old Forest is exactly what I thought when I saw that situation. Even then, I'd only use it against wolf packs and ants. Snakes always catch me off guard.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

Also trolls. Killing 3 trolls takes a lot of clicks early in the game.
