Re: Is it just me, or...?
Another useful thing for archers are the Magic Mapping scrolls. Knowing exactly how the level is laid out makes it easier to know where to stand. Also, to reiterate a couple of the really important points others have made:
- Play slow! By far the #1 way my characters die is impatience (always check to make sure there isn't an OOD monster in the group you're hacking through, NEVER lean on your '5' key to rest, don't hold down a direction key to run, etc. these are all ways I've died, repeatedly)
- If you aren't a melee character never be in melee range of a boss or, ideally, even regular monsters. Every single boss in the game (except maybe the Sandworm Queen) is a risk to "one-round" a non-melee character if you're in melee range, and by "risk" I mean you have a 20-30% of dying every round you're in melee range of a boss (and that's assuming you're at full health. It goes up if you're damaged). Since the game (generally) ends if you die, nothing is more important than staying alive, so be quick with those phase door scrolls.
- Those bosses can wreck melee characters who are in melee range as well. If the boss resists your cc move, seriously consider fleeing
- Finally, I've been east, done a few dungeons and unlocked some classes, but I seriously carpeted Middle Earth with dead low and mid-level characters before getting there, and after he died, I've gone back to work, killing more characters. Last character was a Dunedin Sun Paladin who died at level 6 to Bill. Zapped Bill a few times with Sun Beam to soften him up, then when he got into melee range I tried to shield bash him. Bill resisted it, stunned me, then disarmed me, THEN landed a regular melee attack. Did ~200 damage in one round to which I said "WTH? Bill just curbstomped that character. I thought Sun Paladins were supposed to be super powerful?" Sigh. Rogue-likes are tough games with a ton of randomness.

And edge2054 read my mind...edge2054 wrote: Could also do easy mode like this...So literally the difference between easy mode and normal would be the option to reload after you die and the penalty for playing on easy mode would only kick in if you did reload.Code: Select all
One reload every 5 character levels. Once a game is reloaded you can no longer earn achievements or unlocks that playthrough.

<DarkGod> lets say it's intended
Re: Is it just me, or...?
Actually, this... this is huge. Between this thread and some stuff that I read in the Spoilers forum, it turns out that once a boss has seen you, he'll actually come to you! I had no idea. I figured they were like all the other monsters, and that I'd have to come to them.Patryn wrote:@greycat:
2. If you phase door away, you know from which direction the boss is supposed to arrive. Take a good position - at best on a 1way-corner where you get a free shot before he has LoS on you
Being able to lie in wait at a position of my choosing makes an incredibly huge difference in strategy (especially for ranged characters, though fighters might still want to wait in a spot where the boss will come around the corner right into my shield pummel).

Indeed
Also pump up heightened senses to see them coming from afar
