beta 6 impressions

#1 Post by Dracophile »

The 6th Doctor is now a lvl 25 mage, clearing Tol Falas. Been an interesting ride, guessing which talents/skills points to use and where. (Colin Baker will wave goodbye from his TARDIS after dispatching the Master)

Talents: 5 pts - Arcane Power, Manathrust, Flame, Corrosive Vapor, Chain Lightning; 2 in Inner Power, 1 pt - Manaflow, Stoneskin, Dig, Freeze, Illuminate n Inner Power prereqs
Skills: 5 pts - Health, Displacement Shield, 4 pts - Phase Door, Sense, 1 pt - Heavy Armor, Teleport, ID, Vision, Regenerate, Heal, Restoration

I must say, splitting the points up into 2 categories makes for a far more well rounded mage. It's a bit more difficult, early on, because your damage spells aren't maxed as quickly, but it's doable. In beta 4, around lvl 18 my mage was wasting everything, rather easily. In beta 6, a mage's power appears to have been toned down pretty well. The hardest thing is lack of/running out of mana. Instead of wearing one ring of +3 sp/turn, I have on 2 rings(.3 and .2) and I'm still having to rest often, whereas in beta 4, I NEVER had to rest.

2 comments on the "auto-aim" system: Is there a way for the auto-aim to target the nearest monster in the line of sight? 2nd trip to the ring shop, and there was an amulet of greater telepathy, which I had just enough $$ to buy. So, the auto-aim targets the nearest monster, and if I'm not paying attention . . poof, wasted spell. Also, when the auto-aim targets a monster, an info box appears. This isn't a bad thing, however, there are times when it covers the line-of-sight to the monster, so you can't tell if the spell will actually hit the monster.

Thumps up for the auto-recast of Sustained Spells on a level up. Makes certain they're being used at the proper level.

Gems? Its obvious they'll be used for something, someday. Should I save them?

All in all, a good toning down for the mage class so far. And it seems the balance between skills and talents goes pretty well for a mage.
