I just thought I'd pop back in here, in case someone happens upon this thread in the future.
If you pop into a dungeon in an attempt to set it's minimum level, there's a chance you might get an escort quest, and either have to throw your life away trying to finish it, or leave the dungeon and auto fail it.

really? that's a massive change
Not really no, the levelup system was always intended to present you with a challenge of your level (roughly and within limits). Not to offer a cheap way to make everything easier ..

In a related question, how does this affect the strategy of leaving vaults and chests unopened and coming back for them later after you've leveled up some? Am I going to have to amend my strategy notes for 1.5 to include "never open chests" and "never do vaults after Daikara?"

I actually like this change. But it is still massive imho
Its actually not a massive change.
It will only affect floors that aren't generated yet and possibly chests.
So unless you attempt to trick the game into making zones lower level than you are, or save chests until later, you won't notice anything.

For those playing madness and to a lesser degree insane it is huge.
But the stair scumming changes are even bigger. They will make madness even more difficult. You will have to wait 10 turns before changing levels .
I'm hoping howls of protest will cause darkgod to change the stair scumming nerf...
