Thank you for this wonderful game

#1 Post by TOMEfanatic »

Just want to say that I am new to this game and am already hopelessly addicted. I do not quite know what sets this roguelike apart from all the others, but for some reason, it has me in it's grasp like no other. I purchased it on Steam and already have over a dozen Steam hours in so short a time, and I am seeing people with 500+ hours - one person had 2000+ hours in the review section - and that impresses me quite a bit. I can't begin to imagine what kind of depth this game holds to elicit this kind of dedication from it's fanbase.

To think that this game was created by basically one guy...it just boggles the mind. Big thank you to DarkGod and anyone else who may have contributed to this miraculous game. And while I know it's not much, I will show my gratitude by spreading the word to everyone I know.

Lastly, and a bit off topic, did the Android version release with Ashes of Urh'Rok or will it perhaps be available at a later date?

I'm with you 100%. This game is a gem and I'm so addicted I barely even play other games. The whole time I do I'm thinking about my characters in TOME.

I think I know what sets it apart: A thoughtful, and easy to use interface, & a lot of story.

Interface: I've tried to play ADOM, but even though I'm 45, and grew up with complex keyboard interfaces, I couldn't get into it; not when I know there are better ways to go about having fun. Every time that I play TOME, I can tell that almost every aspect of the interface is the result of someone playing the game, and offering feedback. The result is an interface which enhances game play, and takes away the drudgery.

Story: There is a place for randomization in games, and some do it very well, but TOME has a story that is accented with tons of interesting lore. The random element is there to keep you on your toes, and keep it fresh, but it's not at the expense of story.

TOME is the best donation that I've ever made.

I play that game too (ADOM). Steam release is coming out soon and they are working hard to make the game more user friendly without all the complex key combinations to perform actions, most things will be able to be done with mouse clicks now. It's looking really good.

To be fair, TOMEs interface could use some improvement too, especially the level up/skill screen.

I agree that ToME's interface is leaps and bounds ahead of any other roguelike I've played. There's always room for improvement, but overall it's very well designed. I also like that the randomness is kept to reasonable levels and the story is more than a text wall when you create a new character.

pretty much this, there is a working lore behind the game that attracts not only RL enthusiasts but RPG players too

An engrossing and awesome experience so far! I find myself buying all the lore books from the store and just reading them. Thank you for all the hard and marvellous work done on TOME!

I add to the list of thank yous :)

Completely by accident, I found Tales of Maj'Eyal on Steam daily sales and noticed it's made by DarkGod. *The* DarkGod? I thought. After some googling I found that yes, this is the good old ToME I knew and played back when version 2 was current, even had some fun online in TomeNET.

I congratulate you 1000 concurrent players on Steam and appreciate that the game is kept free but open to donations. I can't really afford to send you much, but I bought the game and DLC for the discounted price hoping even a little bit of money helps :)

Finally, I cannot stress enough how much I am grateful you allow ASCII mode to be turned back on. I grew up on text rougelikes and simply dislike tilesets. Letters are much, much easier for my brain to quickly comprehend. Thank you so much for leaving this option :D
