Rogue class

#1 Post by Pile_O_Gunz »

So anybody had much success with Rogues ? I'm playing normal rogue-like

I've come from Dungeons of Dredmor where I had success with a Rogue and would like to replicate that with Tome.

My cornac rogue died at 14 trying to save derth by charging into a pack of galgoroths with low resist and no teleport(my fault) I made a summoner after and I can't help notice he's had it much much much easier. Rogue was a slow burner even in dredmor but he wasn't made of paper.

Anybody had much success ? does a rogues power scale at a great rate or is he a "challenge class" in for a rough ride all game ?

I haven't played much with Rogue, but the general consensus seems to be that it's not a strong class. You'd probably have more luck with a Shadowblade or Marauder, although the latter needs to be unlocked. If you want to stick with Rogue, some people have had success with trap builds.

I've had success with Rogues, but I don't suggest using them if you are new to Tales of Maj'Eyal. They are fairly hard to get off the ground early on and feature much more challenging play then most other classes until around the time they pick up their first prodigy.

My recommendation would be to jump in with a Shadowblade instead. Here's my Let's Learn for using a Thaloran Shadowblade:

Shadowblades play similar to how Rogues play, but they have some notable advantages such as being able to spend Generic Talent Points for Phase Door and Teleport and can invest sooner in the likes of Rush - And Shadowstep! Just note that like Rogues they start a little weak early on and you'll have to be somewhat careful until you get some of your important talents for mobility online.
Its amazing what the mind can come up with, but it shows talent to make something of it. - Davion Fuxa

And don't play ToME on Roguelike until you are familiar with the game.
Roguelike makes is hard to learn from your mistakes.

Yeah I would suggest Adventure on anything you are unsure what works well. Actually I just play advneture all the time myself, I just don't like the idea of a game where I can make no mistakes. You only get what 4 or 5 mistakes by level 14 anyway, so its not like you can spawn charge things or something like bad MMOs.

Anyway I would say Rogues are OK, they have some avenues to do pretty good stuff, people have won Nightmare and Insane with them.

Stealth rogues in particular should probably be experimented with on Adventure due to the stealth mechanics not being obvious and the defense of rogue maturing later and or being vulnerable to bad luck etc.

But they are kind of inferior to Shadowblade when it come to being a Dual Wielding dagger machine. They are kind of cool with traps, but skirmishers maybe a better trapper really, and while stealth is not bad per se its not the be all end all at all and for melee (not ranged) it requires equipment to beef up stealth rating.

All in all they are an OK class but they have some issues of various sorts, where most of their niches get done better by other classes and the thing that is their niche (not exclusive but close) is really not all the wizbang awesome to differentiate them. In other words they get Scoundrel and Acrobatics, but for a Shadowblade Conveyance is pretty amazing and needs less points than acrobatics and Temporal outclasses scoundrel by a lot. Further if you are going trapping Acrobatics exists in Skirmisher (in fact was made for that class) anyway.

I want to mention briefly that the upcoming 1.3 slightly buffed player stealth - if you have a high stealth score, monsters should now have a harder time tracking you.

I've been meaning to run through with a rogue to see how this feels but haven't had the time.
Addons: Arcane Blade Tweaks, Fallen Race, Monk Class, Weapons Pack
Currently working on Elementals. It's a big project, so any help would be appreciated. :)

just proves that there is different school of thoughts ... IMHO playing on Adventure instead of Roguelike, makes it so you never properly learn how not to make those mistakes, since you aren't to the same degree forced to think about what is the best way to do things, but just shrug it off as the game making it unfair for you, with little consideration about how to make it a more even match.

Maybe, but I think that's more true of Exploration. IIRC, isn't the game theoretically balanced around Normal/Adventure?
