55 hours in and finally...

#1 Post by Roghain »

... I got my first win.

Oh, wait. This be my first post. Just so excited :)

Just registering to say a big 'Ta very much' to mr. Dark God. It has been a while since I have been this addicted to any game. Got it through Steam, hooked from the very first moment.

After a few dozen horrible deaths I went online to look for help on some of the details as I had trouble figuring out things on my own. So, obviously, I landed here. I read through a few score threads, a few character guides and I have to admit, it not for this forum my first win would have taken me longer.

So, I got my win with a Cornac berserker on adventure difficulty. Had to sacrifice myself in the portal because I dallied a tad here and there (humm) so I could not continue with the 'after game' but it was a tremendous romp. I died twice with an ancient bone golem in the Celia mausoleum golem that regenerated so fast plus had a bone shield that I could not whittle it down fast enough and the exit-stage-left teleport I used to escape... well, it wasn't fast enough. have to say that any game that has opponents that are unkillable is a refreshing change from all the other instant gratification stuff around. Other that that, I was surprised how easy the endgame was. The prides were a breeze.

Regardless, I went on to run again, with a skeleton archer in the main game while I am running a ghoul bulwark in the Infinite Dungeon. Not to sure that is a wise combo though: that -20% speed is at times a real pain in the proverbial and as long as I cannot find a teleport rune, I am basically screwed when anything pops up that is a threat which happens to be a lot. Have to remind myself in the Infinite Dungeon one lives or dies by one credo: "Do Not Open A Vault". Simple enough, but the ghoul isn't the sharpest tool to begin with and occasionally curiosity does indeed kill... uhm... the ghoul.

Anyway. It has been a great run so far, I am curious to play all the other various classes and races, but for now I'd like to thank each and every person who posted here in any form or guise - the collected wisdom here has definitely increased my chances of winning a dozenfold or so, so thanks all.

It only took 55 hours to get a win? :o

My thoughts exactly. I was at 136, I think, before I finally won.

Roghain, congratulations! You are shaping up to be a much better player than I am.
I'm not crying. I'm offering a sacrifice to DarkGod in hopes he'll show favor to me.

It hasn't worked yet.

Cheers. I did mention I played on adventurer style, no? I bet a roguelike victory will be something else entirely.

But, I do believe if I had not perused these forums for advice and hints about how to develop my berserker, it would have taken longer.

Adventure mode is recommended for starting out, and I think it's what most people play on the higher difficulties due to the greater possibility of unwinnable situations. Doing research definitely helps in games like this though.

55 does seem quite good for Adventure – well done! :D I'm curious, how many characters had you made it past the Master with before you won? Sounds like at least a few since you had both undead kicking around. And/or how did you fare post-Dreadfell but pre-Prides?

To answer that, the win was my fourth character to make it past the Master. The other three met their demise in
A) The Von Armoury. Yeah, I opened the room of death.
B) The Melissa Crypt. I never encountered that before, so it was quite the surprise.
C) Bloody orc patrols. I was comfortable enough with adventurers, so false security indeed. Oh, and their overland speed got me in a corner with three of them. Just too much.

My skelly archer now, is not progressing well. I find the lack of healing crippling. Also, most deaths are caused by the lack of something to remove effects that immobilize me. I must be missing something, but with just runes and no infusions, I use a teleport, a shield and an offensive (frost preferred) IF I happen to find the Turtleneck - If I get nothing to help with escaping in items, I substitute a phase door - I have found that I actually prefer TWO escape hatches - the teleport is the first choice, if that puts me in a nasty spot, the phase door is a nice backup-chute.

Still, most of the skeleton deaths I have found were caused by opponents that pin me/grapple me/disarm me. If the item drops have been unkind, I find the lack of infusions seriously handicapping me. But maybe this needs to be in another forum.

[EDIT] Smelly... Ooops. I meant skelly, obliviously. And added more afterthoughts
