Deep Bellow and melee using ranged

#1 Post by Wux »

Hello,

I have entered the first level of Deep Bellow (and are a brecklorn and Mayylrann (rare giant white rat) are hitting me from afar with lots of blight and mind damage.
Everytime I move towards them to try and kill them, they move away.

I am ok with this gameplay dynamic, I just want to know how to deal with it as a Level 4 Dwarf Bullwark :)

I am an experienced DCSS player (15 rune wins for Fire Elem and Fighter), and I am used to mobs always moving towards you lol. In the event of needing to kill sometime at ranged in DCSS as a fighter, I would throw javelins.

I am having great fun with TOME, I just need to learn a stack of new things :) As a Bullwark, how should I deal with those ranged mobs I mentioned above?

Thanks.

Brecklorns are a pain alright. Bulwarks have access to Combat Techniques tree which has Rush as tier1 skill. It's a fantastic skill to have.

If I ever run into brecks on chars with no ranged or any other means to close the gap I try to break line of sight with them and gradually drive them into a corner. You can flee back to explored area of the map and lure them along trying to play them into a a known cornered area with no fear of more monsters.

Edit: While Brecklorns are really common in that area the rare rat is a random occurrence. Any rares (with purple/pink lining around them (purple decorated lining designating boss type)) are random named and skilled and should be treated with great care. They are potentially lethal enemies.
Stronk is a potent combatant with a terrifying appearance.

I like to keep a good two-hander of projection in the alt slot to deal with threats like those on their own terms.

That early in the game, don't underestimate the offensive misc. items -- conjuration wands, mindblast torques, etc. Even firewall can do some work. They're often just about all you need to deal with ranged threats during the tier 1 dungeons and are very useful for softening dangerous stuff up, as well, and they're not too terrible rare. Keep an eye out for 'em, keep one on hand, use it until you've got better options for dealing with ranged.

As a side note to this, wands of conjuration are great on pretty much any character in early game, particularly for filling gaps in your cooldown rotation, when kiting isn't an option.

Even for melee characters, the extra burst and utility can vastly outweigh the +1 Str or miscellaneous stats from weak pickaxes, but torques may also be useful to take some of the hurt off for a few turns.
