Cannot access chat in-game, and more

I am unable to join in the chat while playing the game. I press H and the only option is game log. Pressing the space bar while playing does nothing. Clicking the icon to open chat log opens the same thing hotkey H does. I found out today that there is an online chat and I'm sad I cannot access it.

Also, on the te4.org page I have tried accessing the "current ingame chat" and while I can see what others are typing and I can typ in the box I do not think the things I type are making it through, I get no replies.

ANY help would be amazing.

If you go, from the game, to Game Options < Online Options < Game chat (not sure this is the correct path, I haven't been on in a few days), then verify that you are connected to the relevant channels, that might help.

If you wanted, you could also go over the keybindings, located conveniently under Key Bindings.

Finally, or better yet, first, when you press "h", does it only show Game Log? Or are their other tabs beside that one? (Tome, Tome-spoiler, Global are the three that come to mind).

obviously you're having problems connecting to the server when loading your character

when you load your character, you'll always not have a tidbit in the top-right corner of the screen if you cannot maintain a good enough connection to the server while trying to log into the game. If this happens, then immediately when your character is finished loading, you'll see in the game log, in red text, something along the lines of "Online profile cannot be loaded(offline profile enabled). This message is not visible in the message log and is only visible in the little tidbit of the game log next to the chat log when you log in; it is not displayed in the message log. Sometimes you'll get instead Online profile disabled(offline profile enabled) due to unknown error, or something that says unknown error. If this happens, go to task manager immediately, go to processes, click t-engine.exe *32, right click, end process, hit end process in the confirmation window; failing to do this will almost 100% of the time invalidate your character as far as the server is concerned if you save the game after that error shows up, which has quite the bad effect on your character.

Even if you log in on the main menu screen, it doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to stay logged in while your character loads; check for the tidbit about whatever in the top-right corner of the screen while your dude loads, and if there isn't one reload your character until you successfully load your dude with an online profile, and if you get an unknown error thingy, end process in task manager without saving, THEN reload your character.

the reason this is a problem in the first place is because of steam, it makes the game's servers lag
