I donate for the game before it was on steam and I was just wondering if we get a steam key for donation or not ?

Yes. See here for details:

Donators and people that have bought the game through other sources, you can now very easily grab your version on Steam.

Simply log into your profile on te4.org, go to your user profile http://te4.org/user and click on the Steam tab.
You will find a link to own it!

People that bought it on other stores, if you didnt make an account or register your key yet, please do and then you can use the same feature. (Reminder, the key that was granted to you by Desura/Gamersgate/... goes there: http://te4.org/key-redeem

What exactly is a 'steam key'? I think I must be mis-understanding it,

When I click on the 'steam' tab in my profile, I do not see any mention of a key, just a button to sign in through steam. Pressing this asks for a steam username and password (which I do not have) rather than a key to access steam (which is what I expected)

You must have a steam account to be able to get the game on steam ..
And once you do and use that button you'll get a link that once clicked jsut gives you the game on steam, no actual key to enter or anything
