Tome running horribly slow

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Does the game still run in the background of the main menu, even when it is disabled?

Please try the build I posted in this thread when you get the chance.

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Just signed up to say I am having the exact same problem - my fairly new laptop (which can play bioshock infinite just fine) ran everything perfectly before and now the game is entirely unplayable because of huge lag - the main title screen used to load instantly but now takes about three minutes! After this there is massive lag even in the menu screens, as another person said, the mouse moves around fine and other programs work at normal speed while TOME is open but TOME goes horribly slow.

Johnnyzero I tried your fix but it didn't work. Also, I too had all video options disabled and still experienced the bizarre lag issue.
Re: Tome running horribly slow
No change for me with that new .exe fix, still running really slow. Been playing for a while with the earlier beta .exe hollower suggested, and no problems with that one so far. Again, I have a super old system, so I don't expect much.

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Found the problem!! I looked at the system tray and the 'Intel HD Graphics' option that is normally there was nowhere to be found - perhaps the new update to windows 8 operating system disabled the graphics. Anyway, I downloaded the latest driver, the icon reappeared and the game works perfectly now.
The update invalidating my driver caught me off guard. Perhaps a similar thing has happened to other people?

Re: Tome running horribly slow
My scenario was chronicled in another thread, but updating to the newest driver slowed me way down. This was mostly in the beta, pre-1.0.5, though, but I did try it again after just to make sure.

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Thanks for testing the alternate build. It really is starting to sound like a driver issue though. Perhaps one of the OpenGL changes from July has almost zero performance penalty in hardware but absolutely crushes a software implementation.
If possible, can you verify that your driver is providing hardware OpenGL support by running something like GPU Caps? (the zip version should do the trick). The utility provides some OpenGL stress tests which can be useful for manual confirmation too.
For example, my card is providing OpenGL 3.3 hardware acceleration:

Here is another option for checking your OpenGL: http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Ok, so on running the GPU Caps viewer, the box that says GL_Version says 1.4.0, but the one that says OpenGL Memory is blank, as are some of the others. So I guess that's a no. I've always run with all video options disabled and it worked fine, but it looks like it was skipping pretty much all hardware support before, where now it relies on it. Hm, let's see if I can attach a screencap...

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Okay, I'm fairly certain that SLupo's problem is a driver issue. The machine in question is significantly stronger than mine and should have no problems with the graphical changes in 1.0.5. hexagonalbolts and misentry reported having similar issues under Windows 8 with the resolution being replacing the bogus video drivers installed by windows update.
Morganp, your case is much different given that your hardware is ancient but has proper drivers installed. Please try this executable and let me know how the performance is. Hollower, you may want to give this a shot too.

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Ok, just got home, looks like that new .exe is just as slow for me. It's a little... more jumpy? Maybe the refresh rate is different or something, but basically, still just as slow as the last one.
Johnnyzero, I appreciate all the attention on this; but, please don't feel obligated to make the game play for me, unless you're intent on getting to the bottom of the mystery. I understand that the solution is probably "get a real computer!"

Except its never that simple. You can get a real computer and still have it not work right.morganp wrote:I understand that the solution is probably "get a real computer!"

Re: Tome running horribly slow
Outside of cherry-picking out commits, recompiling, and handing off the new exe for testing, there's not much else I can do. As a final sanity check, can you run the "GL 1.2 - Simple Mesh" OpenGL demo in GPU Caps? I'd imagine your GPU could at least push 100FPS in a simple test like that. If the test refuses to run, or runs at a ridiculously low FPS, the issue is on your end. If it passes as well as a geforce4 mx can, then there is an issue with t-engine that should probably be addressed.
Re: Tome running horribly slow
Looks like that simple mesh is one of the only tests that will run, since all the others require 2.0 or higher. I get about 97 fps, with just a few other windows running in the background.
