Okay, so we have one Definitely for the above pic, one on the fencepost but not against... what do the rest of the people who've commented on the thread think about that compromise? It's beardy enough to be a beard, but clean enough to not be a beard. Add some thicker eyebrows and you have something I think could please both sides of this question.

I'd go a bit finer on the hair thickness and add some ribbons or other accessories.

This time I traced the images directly over the sprites so that we can get an idea of how these might look like if they were implemented. The top row has the image resolution of the character doll, the bottom row is the PC's map sprite.

dwarf sprite 64.png
dwarf sprite 64.png (17.63 KiB) Viewed 6534 times
1: current sprite
2: thick eyebrows and braided sideburns (Jeoshua's pick)
3: thinner braids with ribbons (HousePet's pick)
4: braided beard from page 1 (Grey's pick)

The ponytail had to be removed for 2nd and 3rd designs altogether as it made them too cluttered and confusing. That's also true for the 4th, but I felt like it did more good than harm in that particular instance.

I feel like the main problem with 2 and 3 is that at smaller scales the beard looks too much like a pair of ordinary hair braids. This becomes especially true for the 64*64 sprites. Players will just interpret the sprite as not having a beard at all and we'll end up having this exact thread all over again.

While I won't go into detail here, I have a very strong theory about the Dwarven reproductive cycle. Suffice to say, there are NO female dwarves, what you see is an exceptionally fat/hairy halfling.

Having read this thread for the first time now, I must say Impy - You can really contribute a lot to the graphics of this game. I think you were hampered by the scrum-posture of the existing dwarf sprite. But your drawings are very good.

No 4 - of the sprites - the others just look like they have pigtails.

Maybe a thin short one from the chin with no mustache and the main ponytail going up from the top of the head.

I'm partial to #3, although I agree that it might be difficult to tell there's a beard when it is very small. Perhaps add a light fringe of a beard over the chin?

I'm not as good as Impy, but you can get the concept. I had to move the sprite downward a bit to fit in the ponytail.

It doesn't make sense to me that people give dwarven women beards AND moustaches. No lady of any race would abide in growing lip hair (unless its some kind of gorilla race).

Number three from the Impy pic in page one would have been perfect if not for the nose whiskers.

Some human males grow mustaches and others shave them. Who is to say you couldn't have some female dwarves with beards and some without beards? Custom Tiles so everyone is right?

But for the default dwarf female image...
Page1 & 2 Images= We're not using images that big so that's not how they will look in a small sprite regardless of how good some look at that size. http://www.facialfeminizationsurgery.in ... faces.html

Page3 Impy's Images= #1-3 look like pony tails, but all those and Kestell's are much better than Impy's #4. IF Impy's #4 "hairy guy with man-boobs" is selected for the female dwarf, then put bright colored ribbons and rhinestones in her beard and/or red lipstick or... something.

From wikipedia:
"The female dwarves in The Lord of the Rings novels, which greatly inspired D&D, were able to grow beards as well.[20] Some authors, such as R. A. Salvatore, have followed suit in their writing, though the game rules' official position is that females do not grow beards—the fourth edition of Dungeons and Dragons portrayed female dwarves as "beardless and even attractive".[21] In specific campaign settings, the potential for female dwarven facial hair sees much variation: In the World of Greyhawk some females can grow beards but those generally shave, in the Forgotten Realms they can grow full beards but also usually shave,[22] and in Eberron they do not grow facial hair at all. In older editions of the game, female dwarves did grow beards in various campaign settings."

Perhaps at one time female dwarf beards were in fashion and now not so much... almost like female fashion changing more often than male fashion is even common among dwarves.

Female dwarves have beards, end of story. They dress their beards differently, much like the hair on human heads (dwarves are less fussy about that - the beard is a much more personal statement). If anything dwarf women grow their beards longer, but when plaited this wouldn't be very noticeable.

A female dwarf shaving off her beard would be something quite strange and perverse in the traditionally conservative dwarf culture. It would be like shaving your head or walking around naked.

Puzzle Quest had a heavily bearded female dwarf, but I can't find a picture just now.

Obviously not all dwarf culture otherwise there wouldn't be such variety in dwarf lore/games/books as referenced above. Lots of human men shave their heads and beard shaving isn't illegal (like walking around naked). As mentioned earlier, there are no female dwarves traditionally so your "traditional culture" isn't traditional but strange and perverse... to some. Traditional culture dictates we remove this unnatural strange and perverse female dwarf option.

Dude, you do realize that Grey writes the lore? As in how he says things work in this world is how they work. When he's referring to tradition, he means in the game universe not ours.

Yes, dude. He said as such in the first post. You might want to read the entire thread because you've missed the point. You might have noticed even after his first post and others that people still made posts, attached images/sprites and many still voted in the poll. People will voice opinions and disagree in threads and even if someone disagrees with darkgod somewhere with something and explains why then it won't be the end of the world.
