First time playing!

#1 Post by Skeith »

It's my first time playing!

And I get slain by a level 3 troll within 30 seconds, while still figuring out how to move.

But, I am loving this game so far. I have quite a bit of experience playing NetHack and Moria, so a lot of this feels great, but getting used to moving/doing things with the mouse is still throwing me for a loop.

Here's to hoping for great things!

No! Don't use mouse, only for mouse over info screens.

Numpad is for moving and numbers for activating skills.

Edit: as a clarification, mouse movement often leads to rushing which is bad. When you move via Numpad you will adopt a more tactical approach, which as you know from playing Roguelikes, is good.

For me the ctrl button often acts up and instead of activating ctrl+1-0 command it'll kick me to desktop, so I'm using mouse for info pop ups and activating some of the skills.

Welcome to the game, and if you haven't already, be sure to make an online account for the game itself. The folks in the chat there are very helpful, and it's often a quicker method of getting assistance/advice/bragging then the forums can be. And thankfully, this games a LOT easier to learn then nethack.

Seconded for mouse avoidance. I actually try to avoid using it at all except for info-pop ups.

I'd like to third the no-mouse thing.

If you're having trouble setting up buttons for talents, I recommend 1-9 for active talents, 0,-,= for escapes, and Ctrl 1-5 for healing/shielding talents.
Everything after Ctrl 6 can be used for click to toggle sustains, or items (such as a pickaxe or wand).

I've never had the exit to desktop problem personally, but if you do end up having issues, you could try using Shift in place of Ctrl.

What OS are you using Mayfair? Ctrl F4 might be something you'd bump, and that's windows shortcut for closing a window, IIRC. Pretty sure you can disable system shortcuts in windows, other OS's might have something similar, is it possible you're somehow bumping some system-shortcut that coincides with your hotkeys?

Additional protip: Right click sustains, and set the auto-use to 'request confirmation before using'. This prevents a mistyped button from turning off a crucial sustain at the wrong time.

I'm on Ubuntu Linux. The shortcuts work when I carefully push the buttons but when I do it hurriedly I've gone to desktop. Can't understand what causes it to do that, my fingers aren't certainly that big.

I'd like to give some support for the unloved mouse.

When the mouse stops 'twitching' causing me to fire a spell in completely the wrong direction, often into an escort, and on one occasion, causing a death, I'll stop dissing it.

I just remove the cat fur from my mouse and it works fine again.

My optical mouse of maybe 3~ish years died recently (left button stopped working), so I had to switch to a track-ball mouse. I am now constantly finding loose hair around the track-ball, and it is unbelievably annoying.

I managed to find a suitably priced trackball mouse a few years ago and I think it took a year to completely break.

It was either Logitech or Microsoft product. I really prefer trackball over regular mouse, especially when there's no rush with rapid mouse movements required.

I like using trackball mice more, it feels like they can take a lot more abuse, but when I need to move it quickly, it's like the computer doesn't register completely where the mouse is going. So when playing games like Osu, I have to use an optical mouse.

I have a Microsoft USB mouse/keyboard combo that I am in love with, but right now I'm using a GE trackball mouse from the '90s. I like how it feels, but my hair keeps getting caught in it.

I suggest setting auto-explore on some common keyboard key (I use tab), you will be using this alot in the future.

That's actually a good idea. Haven't even thought about it myself.

By default the auto explore is on z while the map entry button is > meaning they're next to each other.
Often times in world map when I'm supposed to enter an area I hit z and explore into a hostile adventurer party.
Even worse than that is just entering an area and instead of auto explore I leave the map again just because I hit the wrong button.

Funny thing, I never used > to enter area in Tome, I sometimes do stick with right-mouse button. I just use auto explore so often I had the need to move that key. Also, I dont use english kb, so my z and y keys are switched.
