Just got Game-Need Advice on Character

#1 Post by deathknight1728 »

I played this game a bit and start to think I have understood a bit of it. The problem is with regards to games like this, I like making my character with the stats that I find make them cool. So would it be possible to somwhat ignore part of the favored stats of my build/class.

Id like to make a bulwark character but instead of using dexterity, I would like to put 2 points into strength per level and 1 point to willpower so I have higher stamina and resistances.

Is this possible or should I play another game.

That is definitely possible, and I would say even recommended :)

Melee mages (I don't mean Arcane Blades) and magical rogues (I don't mean Shadowblades) are doable, and provide unique styles of play. Play what you like how you like, and don't be afraid to try different things.

Thankyou for that excellent and speedy tip. And sorry for the post in another topic. I thought that I could only get approved by making threads and not by making posts.

(Quick tip: Willpower doesn't increase resistances, as far as I know. And you might want to take a look at Constitution.)
Step One: Redux
Step Two: Paradox Clone
Step Three: Watch game go insane.

You bet! The other post wasn't bothersome at all, but it was discarded, so all is good.

Welcome, deathnight, and have fun! If you're doing Wil on a bulwark, you may want to consider going anti-magic or using the "wild gift - Harmony" tree, because both scale with Wil. They're optional, of course, and a bulwark remains viable without them.

And what azrael said: Wil doesn't increase resistance (neither does Con, but the Thick Skin talent does), but Wil does increase mental and spell save, which is nice.

just thought i'd add that most classes in the game can definitely be built in an unorthodox way, that's why there are so many upgrade options!

you can also create your own "challenge mode" where you impose restrictions on your character. A summoner who doesn't put any points in any summon skills is a popular challenge. Or a mindstar berserker. Maybe a rogue with two shields that can only use traps? there's tons of possibilities.

But with any class, there will be certain requirements to get certain talents, or to use those talents with the most efficiency. If you neglect dexterity completely on a bulwark it won't kill you, because a bulwark can also focus on killing things quickly. You can focus on getting as much damage out of that one hand as you can. Maybe you don't want to use your shield at all, and decide to open up the 2hand tree. You're free to do whatever you want, and alot of classes have less traveled roads built into their upgrade paths, bulwark being one of them.

Dexterity will help your guy avoid attacks, and goes well with a defensive build. i think it might synergize well with some of his talents too, but you're not required to focus on those talents.

Since Riposte got nerfed, Bulwarks actually rely a lot less on Dexterity now than they used to when the class was originally implemented. It still helps them, but it's hardly required.

Willpower would be a great secondary stat if you're going for Antimagic.

...you're referring to the Riposte change as a nerf? No way! It went from win-more with some utility as a chaff clearer to "let me drop a double damage Assault on your head".
<Ferret> The Spellblaze was like a nuclear disaster apparently: ammo became the "real" currency.

Seconding that.

Old Riposte was junk. Especially for Sun Paladin, who doesn't even get a decent Defense rating to start with, but the win-more nature of old Riposte made it only good if you were somehow having massive troubles getting through the earlygame with Bulwark, despite the gamebest overall physical setup.

At which point you were probably screwed long term anyways. New Riposte helps a lot more with the late game, and that was(and still is, to a degree) Bulwark's issue.

As to the Dex vs Will thing...ehn, Dex is one of Bulwark's better stats(It pumps Shield Wall and Greater Weapon Focus, as well as Defense), but yeah, you can live without. May not be optimal, but I think this is more asking if it's possible, not if it's optimal, and it is definitely possible to create a viable, solid sidegrade Bulwark through pumping Willpower and Strength.

Just make sure you get Antimagic from Zigur. Otherwise, it's not that good and requires a lot more game knowledge to make viable.
