Let me make sure I understand Armor / Armor Hardiness

#1 Post by Charlatan73 »

Ok, so let's say i have armor of 34, and an armor hardiness of 58%.

If I were to be hit for 100 physical damage with 0 armor penetration, i would:

Start with 58, as that's my hardiness %age
Subtract my armor from 58 - 34 = 24

End up with taking 76 damage.

Is that right?

Start with 58% hardiness. You can block 58% of incoming 100 damage = 58 damage. Your armor rating is 34, so you can block a maximum of 34. That leaves 58-34=24 damage unblocked. So, 42 (damage you couldn't block in the first place due to not having enough hardiness) + 24 (leftover from what you could block) = 66.

A simpler explanation is that you calculate two numbers, and you use the lower of the two.

The first number is 34, as that is your armor. You can't block any more than 34 damage, ever.

The second number is 58% of 100, or 58. You can't block any more than 58 damage from this attack.

34 is less than 58, so you use 34. You block 34 points of damage. Therefore you take 66.

That's the main part of it (ignoring APR). One thing to keep in mind is that armour is that it is applied before a bunch of things that increase damage, making it more effective than it looks on paper.

An enemy with "100 damage" on their character sheet hits for anywhere between 100 and 150 damage (usually, excluding talents and critical hits). At the low end, you would take 66 damage instead of 100, but at the high end you would end up taking ~100 damage instead of 150.
