RNG being unkind, so far as I know. That, and you're not popping back into derth for a decent damage green. It can be a major early-game changer to pick up a flaming/daylight or something from one of the shops if you're not managing to get acceptable kit off the ground. End up having to do that occasionally on classes with lower early game damage, especially if I'm going dual-wield.

E: Oh... right. Also, flame kiting will kill pretty much all the tier one bosses without having to melee them, at all. Also an option!
E2: To be more specific, a talent level 3 flame will kill prox in 3-4 shots, which you have the initial mana bar (even with flaming hands going) to throughput. Between the regen infusion and a single point in arcane reconstruction (at this point, still a full heal), Prox isn't going to kill you even if you just stand and trade blows, much less if you flame->back until flame comes off cooldown->repeat. You might need to pop the manasurge if you're going in straight melee to get the mana for reconstruction, but probably not. You can do the same thing with lightning, though it's less efficient -- lightning's a bit weaker than flame in the early game vs. single targets.

As far as I can tell, you're likely to find 3 to 6 random uniques before you run into Prox, and any one of these random uniques is deadlier than Prox.

As far as equipment goes, I generally find lots of it, mostly single- and double-ego. None of the pieces I find are particularly awesome, but they aren't plain whites either. Lack of gear isn't what's killing me, except insofar as none of it gives me immunities to the six thousand negative effects I'm constantly hit by.

The only way you are going to find those random uniques is if you kill another boss before prox, and if you did that, you should have no trouble with either. random rares dont spawn in the zone you started in, except for undead.

Yeah of all the starting areas I've experienced, Trollmire is one of the easier ones. First zone has no purp rares, so no worries there, it's just big trolls and small game.. a snake here and there. They shouldn't be stacking negative effects on you as far as I am aware, and Prox isn't a certain Reaver...

Definitely. I think for most chars trolls are easier to deal with than snakes. Just because they're slow and don't actually deal much damage if you use your runes/infusions judiciously. To hell with the armok-damned snakes in this armok-damned forest.

Ah! That's good to know. (I usually play a Dwarf or Thalore or Anorithil or some other combo that doesn't start in the Trollmire.)

Technically they don't spawn on the first three levels you generate. This is why rares can show up in the Blighted Ruin (it's four levels long), and it means if you start in Trollmire but wander over to Norgos's Lair to preserve your escorts you don't see rares on Lair 1 or 2 but can on Lair 3.
<Ferret> The Spellblaze was like a nuclear disaster apparently: ammo became the "real" currency.

I have to redact my earlier post, I was playing a Cornac Reaver and a purple named troll spawned on lvl 1 of the trollmire. Was rather confused.

That's not a rare, it's a unique. That is, rather than being randomly given talents from a player class, it's a predefined enemy, distinct from other trolls, that will be the same every time it shows up.
