Awesome new vault in Old Forest

#1 Post by jenx »

I visited the Old Forest at lvl 20 for the first time, and encountered on level 2 an incredible vault I've never seen before. It was massive, with lots of hidden rooms that you have to dig for all over the place to find the weak spot in the walls. There were rooms full of gems, and lots of cool stuff, though most of it not powerful enough for my character at this stage.

Oh, yes, did I mention it was TEEMING with lvl 35 characters - dragons, bandits, etc. A few close calls!

oh the Bandit fortress is quite fun. It weird seeing a vault that is pretty much the size of the map. though I think it is weird for bandits, minotaurs and dragons to be rooming together. When I went through this on a goblin rogue (20% xp penalty) I was able to level up from 18 to 19.

<yufra> every vault designer should ask themselves exactly that: What Would Grey Do?

That didn't sound like the regular bandit fortress to me... sounded like a bandit megafortress. Regular bandit fortress only has the one hidden gem room. Nice place, cept when the bandits give you a second insidious poison after using your wild infusion, haha. But grats on finding one with gear you couldn't use yet.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?

This had four doors at front, with very large hallway behind it. There were two gem rooms at top, four corner turrets, each containing a room full of many nasties. There were about 8 areas you had to dig into to get stuff, including one room that I never worked out how to get into, even though I digged around it endlessly from every direction. It was surrounded by water, which was great with an amulet of the fish, as I sat in the moat outside, around the corner, and lots of npcs drowned.

Nice find. I have never seen anything like it. And sure would like to... I am of the camp that more random (amd impressive) elements like this should be included in future releases. :)

I found one of these as a Temporal Warden on the 3rd level Old Forest. I was getting great loot and exp, chipping away at the mobs by leading them outside and picking them off slowly, and drowning the ones I couldn't in the moat that encircled it.

But, alas, I hit a paradox and was teleported smack dab in the middle in a large room. The large room was completely filled with dragons, trolls, orcs, etc. and all 10+ levels over me. Used my only teleport, but it just sent me in another one. I was killed the next turn.

I've never seen it again, though...

Ok.
I just arrived in the Old Forest just to find this mega size bandit fort.
But as with jenx, I also have problems digging through the walls.
There are several room visible I can not dig into.

If this is not a *spoiler*, what affects digging sucess on theese walls?
Strength or anything else?
Im playing a hobbit rogue, so strength is not my best stat, and my pickaxe uses 37 moves.

A given wall is either diggable, or not. It's defined in the vault's code. Some of the rooms in some of the vaults have only one diggable wall, so you'd simply have to try each one in turn, or read the vault's code (which may be considered cheating).

A less annoying (than the first method) and non-cheating (as opposed to the second) way of knowing which walls are diggable would be using something that reveals your surrounding: non-diggable walls cast a shadow in such effects, making it easy to see which walls you can dig (only tried it with the burning star in b24).
