If you've watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, the "space noises" are beeps from the machinery or the breathing of the actor, perhaps ambient breathing would be enough to suit the mood?

I'm still not gone... just slammed with work. Its getting close to the holidays and part of my work really picks up during this time.
Its a love hate kind of thing. Will get back to these effects as soon as I am able.

Yeah, for the most part these are very well done, Elvisman2001, but there are some sound effects I don't like having in the game. I would say ToME has a relatively serious ambiance and tone, and some of these sound rather fake, game-y, unserious, or flippant, and actually detract from the immersion of the game.

So, here are some of the sounds I think could be improved (based on where I've heard them in-game):
Snake attacks
Canine attacks
Lightning spell (sounds too tinny)
attacking with daggers (and probably other attacks) (perhaps they're too loud; melee classes can bump a lot, quickly)
some door opening sounds are too long for my liking (perhaps the longer door sound effects could be used only for vault doors)
death message (I like the idea of having timpani sounds, but perhaps have only two "dums" of lower, longer notes)
level-up effect should be a little less obtrusive (again, like the death message, I like the approach, but just use fewer notes)

Anyway, the list of new sounds I've encountered that I do like would be even longer, and hopefully the community and I can provide better feedback once b35 is release :D . Thanks again for your work!

Alright, I listened to the sounds files included in ToME again, and I'll list the main ones I don't like or that I think could or should be improved. Again, I want to emphasize that there are more sounds that I do like than ones I don't, and I hope you continue making new sounds :) .

To start with, I plan to completely remove the sounds for ants, foxes, rats, and worms from my local copy of the game. Also, jelly, snakes, and worm sounds could be balanced to be quieter.

Anyway, here's my list:

achievement
death
levelup
melee_hit_squish
sling
ants (all of 'em)
bear_growl_1
bear_moan_3
bee_2 (and all the bee sounds could probably stand to be improved)
foxes (all except bark_2)
rats (esp. rat_3, and then rat_die*)
wolf_attack_1
lightning
lightning_loud
slime (sounds low quality)
spell_generic2
teleport (ends abruptly)
water (sounds low quality)

Some effects simply sound too electronic or synthesized to me, and I much prefer short sound effects to longer ones (because I play fast and can become spammed with sounds). Also, the quality of the sounds don't appear to be consistent. Some seem to be of high quality, whereas the group as a whole could stand to be higher quality in my opinion. I regard sounds as I do graphical tiles: if a game is going to do it at all, then it had better do it well! Oh, and I expect you can do it well, Elvisman2001, 'cause I know I certainly can't :-P

Going to be after Christmas before i can even touch this again. Working 7 days a week.

And by the way, I suppose the beauty of the sounds in the game is that they can be replaced. I am going by what Darkgod tells me and if he likes them, I am not going to dabble around with them any more. I am not going to be able to please everyone and its not easy at all to come up with all these different sounds and make them short enough, long enough, natural enough for everyone.

I could nitpick because I've been a musician for years, but these are great, no complaints.

as another note, Rat 3 wasn't supposed to be in there. it was a raw file of me making the noises I needed to make before I added effects to make them sound more like squeaks.

Now that some of the sounds are in the game, I will (at some point) be able to hear what they are like in use. i think that will make all the difference for me to see how they really are.

When all is said and done, what i think would be cool is if people used the sound files and make their own and allow people to download them and we would have several different sound packs to choose from. Once the sounds are all in and they are named, I assume people could just use the same name for their sound file and replace the existing one. Hope that made sense.

I hear ya', Elvisman2001, and I really didn't mean for my posts to sound too negative. The addition of these sound effects make the game more polished and professional-feeling. I have some small idea of how hard it is to make or find quality sound effects, and your contributions are appreciated even by audiophiles like me ;-) . You had, I believe, asked for feedback, and I was just trying to be a little more constructive should you (or somebody else) want to redo some of the existing sound effects. I suppose it would have been more motivating had I listed the sound effects I do like, but that would have been more work for me :-P . Anyway, I'd probably like to see more new sound effects before the current ones are revisited. Also, please note that I was wearing high-quality headphones at reasonably high volume when I compiled my list above, and I expect the list would have been much smaller had the volume been lower or had I used speakers.

Indeed it does! This would be similar to what can be done with tiles, right? I'm looking forward to new sounds after Christmas :-D

I appreciate the feedback. I really do and i wasn't upset at all. I think i will work on getting sounds in for everything and then going back and maybe redoing certain ones. There are some that even I am not happy with but wanted to get some in there as place holders. i don't think a list of all the files you DO like would be helpful.

And yes. I was referring to sound packs as being like tile packs. Exactly.

I'd like to step in here and inform the community that I'm in the process of working on SHINY BRAND NEW MUSIC for ToME, all original works. I've written some RPG music already that I've not released, and I'm working with those pieces, as well as composing and recording entirely new ones, 100% inspired by ToME.

I'd also like to work on sound effects and environmental sounds and all of that... however, I won't step on toes... so I'd like to invite Elvisman up there to consider the possibility of collaborating...

If I can find a good place to upload some .ogg files, I'll try to get some samples of the music up for previewing, um, real soon now.

OH... hi there, community! First post for me.

You wont be steeping on my toes.
There's a TON of sounds to add.
Have at it!
I'd just like to have a little recognition in the game for what i have contributed and that is all. After Christmas, I can try and help out. But i am swamped right now.
