Call for sounds

#1 Post by darkgod »

Hello

The end of betas is drawing near, and there is one last sore area to settle: sound effects.
The current ones are kinda ripped from WoW & Diablo2, which is obviously ungood.

So anybody here has got a knack for sound effects ?

Basically take all the files in game/modules/tome/data/sounds and recreate them :)

There's a few public domain collections around that might be worth a look.. e.g. http://www.freesound.org/index.php. Or perhaps Wikimedia Commons (what is the license there?).

I don't have time to look right now, though..

I have no skills in that domain, but Repton brings up an excellent point that I'll try to research myself a bit. There are public domains out there that have some pretty nifty sound bytes. I'll look up a game I periodically enjoy-All Hollow's Eve-and I think they have a link to the free domain where they got sounds.

Okay just found them. flashkit.com and geekswithguns.com or org. Maybe the gun sounds won't really help :) but the other one could be promising.

Years ago I ripped sounds from Ultima Online to use with AngbandTk; I've still got the .wav file somewhere. I hear those same sound effects used in tons of games and movies and TV shows, does that mean they're safe to use by any chance?

I'm no expert on licensing but I doubt you can use them freely.
What I do know however is that the guys from UO licensed at least some parts of the software (server?) only in the US of A which meant you could host your own server in Europe without legal issues. It might be similar with the sounds, that you can use them outside the Americas...
