What should be done about Black Breath in Norseband?

Eliminate it as soon as T-Engine allows doing that in a module: the whole concept is Tolkienian, and does not belong in a radically different setting.

Retain it under a non-Tolkienian name (such as "plague"), replacing Athelas with a thematically appropriate cure.

I'm not sure, or I don't intend to try Norseband when it's released.

[Norseband] What should be done with Black Breath?

#1 Post by ISNorden »

As some of you know, I'm planning a preliminary "lite" release of Norseband for late March or early April, coded under version 2.2.6 of T-Engine. Some of the hard-coded Tolkienian elements can't be eliminated until T-Engine 3 comes along; but when that does happen, when a "full edition" Norseband is possible, what should be done about Black Breath? I'd appreciate some player input here, please!

I sort of think the other way around on it: if you come across something in the mythology that you think would be nifty to include and it would be suitable to model it on the Black Breath, go for it, but don't keep the Breath in for its own sake.
Just remember.. BOOM!!

Actually, a few uniques (both Nordic and foreign) could use a deadly disease attack with similar effects: Hela and Nidhogg on the Norse side come to mind, as do Azrael and Pestilence (one of the Four Horsemen) on the foreign side. Still, disentangling the BB code both from its Tolkienian effect-messages, and from monsters who shouldn't have it in Norseband, might be more trouble than it's worth.

I'd use a real-world disease. Leprosy or Plague would be good replacements. For cure, Golden Apples (of Idun). Maybe she is dropping these occasionally in the dungeons. If you get eternal youth by eating these, it should also remove illnessess. That is, unless you have other ideas for the apples.

Maybe christian priests could get high-level "cure leprosy" prayer (or normal curing, that at high enough level also cures leprosy/plague). Cure leprosy could also be available at the Churches.

I had actually intended the apples to act as a combination of Lembas (satisfy hunger/minor curing) with Mushrooms of Restoration (since time attacks drain stats, it makes sense that apples of youth could undo the drain). Allowing them to cure plague as well would be overkill IMO...though having a rare herb/potion as a cure sounds good, and so does the possibility of a high-level Church spell curing plague.
