Bounty quests... and dragons

#1 Post by Crim, The Red Thunder »

After having played a goodly number of bounty quests over the span of all my characters, some of the most common things to appear as a bounty are dragons... of all ages.

Now i know that in the hilly areas, you can find all the young and mature dragons except the multihued variety.

I also know that in the SLoM and Erebor you can find multitudes of Ancient dragons (Havent had to do many of those with my characters yet... but i know they appear there).

the problem comes when your bounty is too weak to be found in dungeons where dragons are common. For instance, i recently got a bounty for a 'baby green dragon' and havent even been able to see one... (Any help?) It seems to me that you ought to be able to find some of these creatures easier...

Another example are giants... i have gotten several giant bountys, and some of them are more then a little hard to find (Cloud giant, Stone giant....) Not impossible to find, but not as common as some of the others...

Shouldnt there be an easier place to hunt some of these recurring monsters? Like a dungeon with low-level dragons..., another one for giants and various humanoids. Or is there some place in the wilderness where i can find these creatures.. Im sure some other people have noticed this too.

Theres also the HUGE range of difficulty in monsters. I sometimes see a level 12 character get slammed with a bounty quest for a Great Crystal Drake, which he could neither find, nor would he be able to kill it.

On the other hand, i have also seen a level 39 character get 3 cheapo bounties in a row. (red dragon worm, orc, and hill giant.) The giant was the hardest of these, and he was easily found, as were all the other creatures. (dragon worms in the sandhole, and orc in the orc caves.)

And then theres the times when i get a bounty that i know nothing about, and ive never even seen the monster, despite having been through to the second level of mordor. Where the heck can you find a pseudo-dragon? I never even SEEN one, and according to other people they are mid-range monsters, that appear shortly after the barrow downs.

Would someone like to provide a solution to these probelms? As far as this thread goes, a description of where to find some of the recurring-type monsters (like all the different baby dragons..) would be very nice, and anyone else is free to ask about monsters they cant find. (And yes i have tried scanning the edit files, and i have completely explored every level within 5 floors of the depth for some monsters and still never even seen one.)

Some bounty quests are hard to complete (eg. rattlesnake), but it is because the prize, all-powerful skill points, is great. Though with some knowledge of the game you may complete them without much tedium.

1st) collect as much Staves of Summon as you can - they're common in BD, lower levels of Orc Caves, Old Forest so not much a problem.
2nd) research monster you have to hunt for his depth and other abilities.
3rd) then if you find something special (ie. it's cold using & resistant creature, it's aquatic, it's high-level dragon and so on) go to appropriate dungeon level and look out for it if common or start summoning creatures until you get its corpse. If it doesn't have any dungeon-specific features, hunt it in the main dungeons on appropriate level.
(or wilderness, if it lives in the wilderness)

Following these rules you can get enough points of monster lore in reasonable time.

Buy the monster info from the beastmaster. :)

It can be costly if you don't know the correct char for that monster, but will give you the needed infos.

Well, you can always hit 'esc' to get out of that...
And it was such a good idea...

Yes, but you pay on entering the list.

Try it with no money and the beastmaster will not present you the list of creatures.

I think Xandor is referring to the trick where you can research an infinite number of monsters and only pay for the first one.

Not that i would ever even THINK of using that...

If they were easy to find why would the beastmaster need to put up a bounty?

First, AFAIK, there is a bug in the game that allows you to research *every* monster if you don't hit the escape key after researching it, but you push the char you wish to use and the recall button.

see here for details.

secondly, I think the quest system is great! some of the challenge comes from the more difficult monsters you may have to face!
