Amusing: Useless dungeon town

#1 Post by Kalon »

I battled through the Illusory Castle (finding it MUCH easier with a good digger and power of Magic Map) to find this Dungeon Town. I was heartened, until I saw that out of it's eight buildings, it was made up of FOUR Recallers and a General Store!

What are YOUR worst disappointments as far as Dungeon Towns go?

I once had a dungeon town with 5 dragon hunters and two weapon shops in the orc cave. Amusing, but not useless, since there was also a potion store.

Finding a speed ring shop in the Old Forest isn't a problem... Just steal a +10 speed ring there, and you are good to go.
Fear is for those with no confidence.

Yes, you could do that, but when I first started playing, I was too scared of getting banned to try to steal! And those prices - whew!

Anyway, the RNG must *LOVE* me - two levels afterwards, another Dungeon Town! This time, FIVE magic stores - and my Dunédán Swordsmaster had NOTHING he could use in it (having already obtained a War Tome of Tulkas in the Sandworm Lair). Joy!

Then, he stepped in to the final level of the Illusory Castle and got reduced to a gibbering heap sanity-wise with almost full hitpoints by The Glass Golem...

*sigh* Thank you, RNG.

Actually, speed rings shops and dragon hunters in the old forest are way from being useless... eventually you will make use of them (or die, but then, no shop is useful... unless you need spare organs in the next incarnation ;) ). But, the worst nightmare is... soothsayers. A few soothsayer shops in one town. When I play with fates turned off!!!

Just as bad, if not worse: All/any armories, weaponmasters, footwear shops and rare footwear shops... when you are a Monk.

The worst I've seen [2.2.5] was a (maybe buggy) town with nothing
except a recaller.

The level was IIRC some forest-level with a lot of water.
There were market-sounds, but no real town, just a lonely
entrance to a recaller in the middle of an ordinary room.

Those towns crop up sometimes -- I've only seen a handful of them. There's no real town area, and the shop entrances are scattered all over. If you find a town like that, be sure to clear (or at least explore through) *all* trash on the floor, because the shop entrances can get hidden by it.

I just had a character finish scouring Arda and he found zero dungeon towns... until he finally got around to Rhun (did it last), where he found 4!

I absolutely hate it when that happens. I just went through the Old Forest and found no duneon towns oncesoever. So I just killed Old Man Willow and continued playing the game. Oh well, but your situation is a lot worse Elliott. Sorry to hear about it.

Food, sex and advertising.

Once I found a town with FIVE expensive black markets  . Hardly consistent, but a great place to come back to frequently. It had a potion store too, or as many people see them 'Insanity-curing-and-stat-potions' store.

I have always found it amusing with same-type shops (i.e. Expensive Black Markets, Potion shops, etc) that somehow, even though they are in different locations, they always seem to manage to have the same inventory...
And it was such a good idea...
