Hi,
I am in Mt Doom for the first time ever. My char is a swordmaster. The lava walls are really annoying. Is there any way to get through them? It says I cannot tunnel, and my Stone to Mud ability (magical Pick) does not have any effect.
My only solution so far is to activate the ring "Flare" to create a jumpgate? If I didn't have this artifact I would be screwed (espectially with those rooms with no doors). And waiting for it to recharge is a pain as you cannot rest on Lava or Firewalls, so I have to nervously hold down the 5 button.

Flare is the only way you'd survive I think, or if you're patient: use those lava walls like permanent walls. Don't hold down the rest button, that is gonna be the quickest way to die. If you're even more patient, don't hold it down: press the button once, lift finger, repeat if no enemy in sight.

Probability Travel works well. Unfortunately any staffs you are carrying are likely to get drained. The Recall spell also works if you have it high enough to swap places with creatures you can't target.
The other way to handle it is to use the stairs to go up and down until you get a shaft down. If you get a shaft up look for stairs or recall back to town and then back to MD. You can eventually make your way to the top (which is at the bottom).

Re: Lava Walls in Mount Doom
Mount Doom is entirely navigable without special teleportation abilities. You just haven't found the secret doors. The map may prove helpful.
Note that you should be able to rest normally on open doorways, since they aren't covered in lava.

That is the Top of Mt Doom. I think that he is still working his way down (up). If not, my suggestions won't do him any good.Derakon wrote:Mount Doom is entirely navigable without special teleportation abilities. You just haven't found the secret doors. The map may prove helpful.

Re: Lava Walls in Mount Doom
Ah, fair point. Still, the dungeon should almost always* be fully connected. Any time you seem to be surrounded by walls, look for secret doors. More accurately, use your Rod of Detection to find secret doors. You're on Mount Doom, what do you mean you don't have a Rod of Detection yet?
* Like, I've never seen a dungeon not be connected in well over a decade of play, involving way more uses of enlightenment effects than I care to contemplate.

Re: Lava Walls in Mount Doom
Thanks for the help. I WAS working my way up. I'm now dead. Was blinded (so no teleport), the thunderlord artifact I had kept turned out to be normal recall, and my swap position with Flare failed so there you go. Still my most successful char by far. First level 50, first time I have seen the Paths of the Dead, Mordor or Mt Doom. One on one I was beating anything. Never been in that position before, very cool. Only my 2nd char to meat a number of ringwraiths, and this time I remembered to never melee them, seeker arrows/bolts of slay undead/evil + a bit of patiance was all we needed.
There are rooms generated with no doors. The perfect square ones, some with the little internal single space room in the centre. It was one of these which prompted my question. Thanks for the idea of resting on open doors, never thought of that.

Re: Lava Walls in Mount Doom
The rectangular rooms with a corridor on the outside always have one door in the middle of one of the walls. Any interior rooms will also always have doors. The only way to get blocked off by walls entirely is in a vault, and you can't start levels inside of those.
Edit: also, you should have had resist blindness. That, and resist confusion, mean that you can always read scrolls of Teleport, which you should never be traveling without.

Another means of creating a little oasis amidst the insanity is to create a wall and then get rid of it - bravo, whiteness.
