Yeah, you're right, DG. But horned reapers seem to have a very slightly overpowered melee attack - a horned reaper's attack is more powerful than a greater balrog's or even a GWoMC's. Then again, horned reapers have only 2 spells (summon high demons and scare), so I guess that prevents them from being too powerful.

Horned Reapers are some of the highest-level monsters in the game aren't they? They are level 82, a GWoP is level 85.
They're not overpowered. Everything stronger than most is not automatically overpowered.

No, they're level 72.

OK fine, 72.
But what do you expect at level 72? Fuzzy wuzzy hugs and kisses?

I expect something difficult, but less difficult than a level 80 Great Wyrm of Many Colors.

Yes, and a horned reaper can kill you in one turn with three melee hits.
Hmmm, other irritating monsters:
WATER DEMONS! They're not all that tough, but that sanity blast attack is mean .
Barbazus. They always appear in huge groups, and as soon as you start killing them off, they summon more barbazus... and occasionally a balrog or two.
Pit fiends. I really hate that (expletive deleted) summon demon spell. They also have a nasty habit of invoking raw chaos...

The reaper has to get next to you to get in 3 melee hits though. A Dragon can breathe from anywhere.

And a Horned Reaper's attacks aren't even as bad as a Greater Titan's (which hit to confuse) to say nothing of a Hru (which hits to shatter). It's possible (but unpleasant) to fight any of these at close range if you have enough AC and HP, even if you're a mage (AC above around 150, HP over 1000).
So it's your choice. Get protected, or get chopped to bits.

Yes, you're right. The only problem is speed. Those suckers know that their strong point is melee, and will attempt to get right next to you. And that's pretty easy for them unless you have +20 speed...

Making sure to have the right speed for your depth is a rule going back to Angband. It's in the same newbie guide as shoot-and-scoot to keep monsters from meleeing you. :-)

Yes, you guys are right... I just suppose I get PO-ed when that demonic quylthulg (offscreen) summons a reaper right next to me. Maybe I should turn on the scroll with movement option.

Yes, that might be wise.
Perhaps people should start thinking about making autoscroll the default behavior.

Yes, like in Cthangband. Weird... it says the option slows things down a lot, but it doesn't slow the game down at all in my experience.

All of the (slow) warnings pertain to really low end PCs, like my laptop.
