How do you do it?

I think teleporting past quests is cheating, and havent ever even tried it. After completing more than 90 of the 98 quests (once), I still say it is fun. Hrus around dlvl 80, that was a bit painful. The one for 6 Death Orbs was also tough. I did not meed any Time Hounds though.Neil wrote:jschultz: You do know that you can't level teleport past Angband quests in ToME 2.2, right?
When you get a quest for 10 levelled Time Hounds or something, we'll see what you think of 98 quests.
On a special level, I had to fight Ancalagon the Black (breathes disintegration, summons Wyrms) and the Destroyer (reflects bolts, breathes disintegration, hits for 4x30d9 and tunnels) at the same time. I managed to split them with telekinetic wave, and then Cantoras pops out from nowhere. I beat them all. But the next special level was even harder...
You can always run away from a random quest and return with equipment tuned for that. But leave a special level, and you could lose some good artifacts forever. I just could not do that.
I dunno. I'm certainly no Lord Dimwit -- I've never won any *band. But my current character (by far the best I've ever had, save 1 character I had a couple years ago in Z) is on level 89 of Angband with 98 quests (the current one is an FF for Great Ice Wyrms) and I'm yet to regret it.Blackdog wrote:If you're aiming to win, don't take 98 quests unless you're very patient, a veteren, or playing 2.1.2.
OK, 19 Greater Draconic Q's in the Dim Gates was really, really bad. I was regretting it at that point. Took me three hours to get through it (although half an hour was going back over the level after the fight, identifying everything and alchemizing all the non-artifacts). But the levelled Chaos Wyrms (twice), Sky Drakes, and Beholder Hive Mothers have been a small price to pay for the extra skill points I'm getting from Fumblefingers.
Of course, the last 10 quests may make me change my find. I'm dreading a GWoP quest and I think I've got at least one more special level to fight through. So far, though, I think 98 quests has made the game easier, not harder.
Hm... I also don't enter Paths of the Dead much.
Usually I like to stick around Land of Mountains as soon as I pick up Gimli or Nain or Erebor (the first two show up very often for me, for some reason). You'll find lone demons (i.e. Bile Demon or Barbazu or something like that). Throw a rock at them, and them wait for them to mass summon, and then just pummel them around for a bit and rest in the rocks when you're low on health.
Demons are a great source of junkarts, and junkarts can be darn useful for things like greater heal (700) and genocide and mass geno.
The two things I'm most afraid of in the lower levels of Angband are Water Hounds and Water Demons. They usually tend to show up in large groups, and if I'm not paying attention, they all cast water ball in one round, and my high level character dies before I react.
I almost always go with 98 quests, as the fumblefingers are really useful. Hunting down master Q and other things in Angband can be a pain, but isn't really all that difficult (get a source of Detection, and then just tunnel around to get to them, so they don't get more than 1 turn to summon).
I really like Mindcraft skill early on, and now I'll still admit its decent, but it's not quite as good as I remembered it. Why? Mindcraft at 45 grants three really good things: clairvoyance, character armor, and teleportation. Nothing else is really worth it (certainly not Mind Wave, which backlashes to confuse you way too often). character armor and teleportation can usually be found with other means for cheaper, and clairvoyance can be simulated with the Eol quest reward Dwarven Lamp of Magi + a Rod of Detection.

Update: Just finished clearing Nameless. 4 quests to go. One of them will be a Princess quest for the Lernaean Hydra if I recall from this level and come back to it. I guess I could just use the stairs at the end of Nameless to avoid the quest entirely, but I figure I might as well take out the Hydra without escorts than maybe have to face it later in the Void. I've beaten this thing several times with other characters, so it shouldn't be a big deal.Fael wrote:Of course, the last 10 quests may make me change my find. Other than those Greater Draconic Q's in the Dim Gates, still nothing that makes me wish I hadn't done 98 quests. I also had a FF quest in the Crypt, but it was Greater Hell Wyrms and I had Imm Fire, so I just sneared at them and Fireflashed them all (shouldn't Greater Hell Wyrms resist fire?).
i finished the land of mountains in my current game. then visited all levels of moria. i'm in erebror now. rich harvest of great items in erebror.....Neil wrote:Why Sacred Land of Mountains and not Erebor?
meet you there with joke monsters off? please let me find out for myself.......
