I'm starting to rethink sidequests. I recently had a very nice level 50 deathmold lostoul loremaster die in a fumblefingers quest for a dozen Hrus on a very small level. Either that or I should rethink the allow small levels option. Hrus seem worse than grand master mystics, but I had no trouble with the ones in the Gondolin quests; do earthquakes stun?

Earthquakes can stun. If you aren't severely crushed and take the full 300 damage from it (this doesn't include the direct melee damage, mind you), you get a 1/3 shot to avoid damage and stunning.
I guess I have a tendancy to play hideously overpowerd charachters. (anyone with multiple GWoP companions is pretty safe from monster groups because high end breaths wipe out stuff like that pretty quick. They might be worse in Angband, but I usually get bored and then get a YASD before I get that far.

If *only* Water hounds cast water bolts. Bolts are taken care of by reflection. The water balls that hounds cast/breathe are not blockable by reflection or resistable by anything.

By the way, if you're having trouble with a ff/princess quest on too small of a level, leave and come back. As long as you don't have the persistent dungeon option turned on, you should get a new map that will hopefully have a little breathing room.
Some monsters are listed as "it resists water". Does possessing their corpses give you resistance against the dreaded fluid gestures?
It's not much of a solution, but it's a start..
Sometimes I think ill never beat this game without cheating...
And a ents the easiest one with grow trees and im still going through characters
You lost a summoner? I suppose I shouldn't really comment though, since I found them to make excellent shock troops
After all, if you can't beat 'em......
BTW, I didn't really have to face them bird vs. hound. My hellhound/mature multi hued dragon army really rolled them flat when I told them to *seek and destroy*. I don't care if I end up fated to die on level 70 or something like that (and then really do "meet my fate"). I've had more fun as a thunderlord summoner than I've had in almost any other game for a while (of course before a summoner, my ill-fated thunderlord unbeleiver was my all time fav) I can't wait to grab the cvs and check out the new (improved?) alchemists

It appears to, but as you point out, possessing a water hound isn't practical or possible for most characters.
