Sorcerors without sorcery

#1 Post by Yottle »

Since all the old threads have disappeared, I can pretend that this is a new idea. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=9301

I wanted to try a different approach than a blast and blink sorceror. I decided that the skill points allocations for the other mage types weren't as good as a sorceror, so I ran this one as a thaumaturgist/warper hybrid. In spite of lousy luck with spells, it was an effective combination.

I should have put fewer points into translocation because spectral form makes Probability Travel useless in most dungeons. If I had done that I could have put more into Necromancy. As it was, I never used Necromancy at all (I dumped most of the points into it after finishing the Angband quests).

I remember asking where to put skill points as a mage, back when I first started playing. Everyone told me to play a sorceror instead, due to the superior skill modifiers.

As you say though, your secret is safe now :)

"Blast and blink"?

If you need to blink, you didn't blast hard enough, and are fairly likely dead.

My sorcerors almost never die.

My basic strategy is to abuse line of sight to blast a monster followed by switching to a different position to repeat. No one is going to kill one of the higher uniques in a single turn.

well... it is possible I think (alchemist cheese, but this is a sorcerer, so not an option)

and it might also be viable if you scum the dwarven mining shop for detonation potions (not sure on this one, but a sorcerer should be able to do this.)

now that I said that I have to try it :/ (the latter not the former)

Det potions don't even do enough damage to kill a Mature Gold Dragon in a single turn.

The only way I can think of for a sorc to one-shot a high unique is with Death from the Necromancy school. On the whole, I think I prefer the Yottle approach :)

I agree that an alchemist could kill even Ancalagon in one turn. Probably the easiest way is the mage staff of infinite wizardry cheese- I abandoned my character when it became too embarrassing to continue. I don't remember if I was one-shotting everything, but nothing was taking more than two shots.

Of course since alchemists also have essentially unlimited hit points they are the only characters that don't really need to worry about this.

went back and tried what I was thinking of... I think there was a version where potions exploding on the ground affected monsters... (at least that was what I got out of wastrels (sp?) traps only win, so I may be wrong)

hence the scumming potions from the mining shop... but yeah... this is a rabbit trail ;)

I tried killing something with a stack of detonation potions. Lure the victim onto the stack of potions then cause them to break somehow (a rod of cold balls for instance). But the game only dealt damage as if one potion exploded not the whole stack.

A Fumes trap set for Evil (+5) would fire 5 potions of detonations all at once, but that's barely enough to knock a star off Morgoth's hps.

The super explosion my trapper did in the poison water quest was caused by a chain reaction of potions exploding other potions in the grids next to them. I had 1 to 2 potions on a grid. Two potions on the same grid were of different types so they would both explode normally.

Somehow, I failed to notice this. I guess I've been playing melee characters too much lately.
