Hi,
I'm playing a Necromancer who is now only the 2nd character I have got to lev35. I've started Moria, and made it this far almost exclusively with manathrust. But I am now meeting beasties (bile Demon, Medusa) which take more than 2 or 3 to kill - meaning I am copping some damage. I have 700 HP but don't know how much longer this tactic is going to work for me.
Any tips one what I should be looking at. My skill points have been spent maxing spell power, magic device, and Necromancy. Also got a bit going in Prayer (Eru).

Are you putting points into Mana also? Spell Power is additive with the points in the school (or with Sorcery). So at clvl 35 you could have a level 78 Manathrust (39 in SP and 39 in Mana). I am not sure that is going to take out a bile demon or Medusa in 2 or 3 hits, though.
Playing a magic user it is critical to have high speed and take advantage of dungeon topology to get as many shots in as possible before the monster can breathe/melee/whatever. A warrior can often just wade in and start hacking.
If you are relying on a bolt spell like Manathrust you also need to make sure that you don't get mobbed.

your best tactic in the later stages of the game is to pick your fights as much as possible. There are some monsters that just aren't worth fighting (unless a princess/FF demands it) if you can avoid them. Druj's and Grand Master Mystics come to mind. Flare or getting the Recall spell will make staying alive easier in Angband and the lower parts of Mordor.
If you've never died as a high level necromancer and tried to keep your death points from reaching 0, then that will be an interesting experience for you. Lots of healing is critical IIRC. It was never as easy for me as many forum posts made it out to be.
You need to make sure your Constitution is as high as you can get it from potions and items. As Lord Dimwit says, "Hit Points are what keep you alive."
I seldom take Magic-Device higher than 25 which is high enough to max out wands of Noxious Clouds from stores. By the late game I've mostly abandoned wands and avoid charge drainers with Flare/Recall if I'm still using them.

Thanks for the tips
Never been to Mordor or Angband, still slogging my way through Moria (at 40 now, but never finished it before).
Hadn't put any into Mana, figured the 1/2 prayer (eru) would cover that. Or is that cumulative too?
Is the summon dead style of necromancer not really viable? At the moment I only use it as a distraction when something nasty comes at me.
I was hoping to improve my monster lore if I could ever find a bloody "Stargazer" for the beastmaster.
Have been using Noxious cloud wands too. What about Rods? Or not really useful?
But going OK (by my standards). All resists except sound. 800HP and 700SP.

you would be missing out on a lot of damage if you only rely on eru for manathrust. It isnt cumulative as it only picks the highest skill value and uses it, though spell power raises the damage more.
there are some very powerful combinations you can get with raise dead and could result in being more of a chain summoner at the end game.
rods are not useful for damage dealing.
