neil's right, the answer should be somewhat obvious. it matters in which turn certain events take place.Xandor wrote:Um, how do you scum for FF? Much less to get mindcraft from him?Canderel wrote:BUT I try to get mindcraft from a ff in Barrow Downs (I scum for it)... and try to get it up to 5. (For detect traps)
if everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane

Yes, that's right, but it was my first attempt, not my (more successful) second attempt. The second try took 98 quests, and so finally got a .5 multiplier in Mimicry (though killing druj for quests in Angband is an absolute nightmare for warriors).Neil wrote:By the way, was that character needing mimicry your attempt to get a warrior through the void?
And congratulations, zasvid!

I had a couple nasty moments with druj quests in Mordor. Got killed in one of them, actually (I had undead form, though, so I got better). Strategy: Get as few of them in line-of-sight at any one time as you possibly can, heal damage as soon as you take it (I was a sorc, so I didn't have many hit points, other classes can take a few hits), teleport out at the sign of trouble (failing to do this is what killed me). By the time I got to Angband, I had reflection, so druj weren't a big deal. If you're really stuck and can't beat them, wander through the side dungeons until you get reflection and then come back.zasvid wrote:But did you get a quest for several druj? I'm stuck on one...
Yeah, me, too. I've been playing roguelikes since 1987 and I've never had a winner in any of them until now. Thanks mostly, I think, to the all help I've gotten from you guys in this forum.zasvid wrote:Hoom... I wanna change my vote in the poll - from "no, but really want to" to "yes"
I still don't think 98 quests was a bad idea, though.
My second winning char proved that at least for me random quests are hellish. I've ended with about 20 unspend skill points, omitted nearly whole Mordor and in Angband done only princess quest and I've come to conclusion that for those chars, who can handle them quite easily, these quests are unnecessary difficulties and for those who can't they're dangerous threat. From now on I'll play with 0 random quests.Fael wrote:I still don't think 98 quests was a bad idea, though.
On cheating
I haven't won yet but I think I want to. I have only two tips so far:
1. specialise! Do not spread skill points all over.
2. speed is the best thing you can have at lower levels.
Neil, be kind to the cheaters... I am one, but I have ambitions not to be. It's a way to learn.
Why do I cheat?
Well, so far I have had only 3 characters (with repeats via quickstart after low level deaths). One I have not cheated with. This one's now level 32, and has a bad mix of skills since I was a raw beginner and grabbed lots of stuff intead of specialising. Even had FF accompanying me once, until I found this forum. I think I will abandon this one.
Another is dead at level 17 in HoM after many many early deaths. It was a stupid character anyway - Ent bard. Done for amusement.
The third one is my current Lost Soul sorceror, now just restored to life and level 42!! Plenty of ! of experience in HoM. But I did cheat with backup saves. Died about 4 times so far. This one has good potential to go further - and I get to see what the later game is like and plan strategies for a subsequent non-cheating character.
I am assuming one should not post dumps or claim wins with a cheater. That would be wrong. But I'm having lots of fun and learning the finer points of the game.

Actually, if you're cheating honestly, I think it's ok to mention a character sheet. The sheet will say "You have done something illegal." if you have the cheat options on, so everyone will know. Nobody will be deceived.
The options are there for a reason. Anyone who uses them gets no scorn from me. Only those who copy save files instead of using the honest cheat options gets complaints from me.

Or, to quote my own Angband motto: "rethink, rebuild, return stronger than before."
This should be carved on the ToME tombstone right below "Killed by a foo on dungeon level bar."

Edit: Just noticed that Neil is now a full-fledged Vala. Guess we'll have to put another altar in Lothlorien. I wonder what beneficial powers he provides?
